Went from 454 Chev to a 2001 7.3 turbo 4x4 crew cab with 375000 miles on it (yeah, 375000 on a 8 yr old truck). Truck runs OK but seems sluggish, can only hear the turbo at higher engine speeds (2500 rpm). No smoke, sounds OK, but its my first diesel. 1 owner construction company truck, so maintenance was kept up. Floor it in drive and it won't turn a tire. Stock everything. Aside from checking all the hose clamps and putting a boost gauge on it what are ya'lls suggestions?
Thanks for the welcome. It idles fine, I just ran down to the video store and it really moves from 2500-redline, like its getting boost, but down low its real slow. Does that transmission thing to where its not slipping but seems to have some slack in it, I read the buyer guide on here, seems that's normal. It'll hold 80 on the freeway, just takes a lot to get there.
Welcome to FTE m8. I would check for boost leak first. ses Rons post on a boost leak detector here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-detector.html I made myself one and found that my boots had tiny little cracks in em. Aslo check both your up-pipes at the back of the turbo for black soot. It is very common for the gasket to let go . You can see that mine are shot
One more thing is to have a look inside your turbo. Take off the air intake tube and check out your compression wheel. Look at the condition of the fins. check for play by tryn to wriggle the wheel. A little bit of left to right is fine but in and out play is not good
you will also notice alot of peeps here have gauges (boost, EGT, Trans temp etc) they are a window to your PSD's insides, a must if you ask me.
Its a 7000+ lb truck... and a diesel. Stock...you will get what you are experiencing. The turbo needs to build boost....it isn't a gasser. If you want it to perform like one off the line it is going to need mods....unless you power brake it to build up pressure. But then again...is it a work truck or a race toy? If you want both you are going to have to start with some mods...gauges and a DP Tuner to start...then it only goes from there.
Its a work truck and will tow my fast toys. I just want it to run right and have a little more power, then again I'd hod rod an electric toothbrush if I had any teeth.
