Hey guys, I decided to leave the 67-79 message board for once and venture out. Just bought a 99 Expedition for the wife and kid and dogs and I love it. I've been wondering about what tire sizes you could put on one of these and this post pretty much nailed it for me. By my calculations, a standard 255/70/16 tire comes out to about 10" wide by 7" sidewall. A 285/75/16 would get you 11.25 wide and 8.41" sidewall. Has anybody tried like a 285/65/16? This would be about 11.25 wide and 7.25 tall so it shouldn't mess up the speedometer as much.
Dave,
79 F-150 4x4, 390 w/C6, Edelbrock carb, 33X12.50 never will be finished.
FYI, Wheel size has only a limited effect on the overall package size of your wheel AND tire. You can actually go out and buy 20" wheels for your truck if you want, Of course you will have tires like rubber bands. I personally think this effect looks best on cars for the most part. If you are happy with the way your expedition looks that is great! Now you don't have to go thru the hassle of making a decision about new tires and the size to go with. Be warned, when your tires are due for replacement, the bigger tire bug may get to you.....
Did you replace your tires on the Ford voluntary replacement program? I had assumed that you had to replace with the original size tires. I would really like to get the bigger tires, though.

What is this Ford voluntary replacement program? I still haven't replaced my tires yet but I am getting very close.
I have similar question. I've been looking at the Pirelli (Scorpion Zero's) Size 285/65 16. My concern is the rim width of stock rim and the recommeded rim size for the tire. Based on what I have read in this string of replies, I would expect everyone to agree it would not be a problem. Am I correct guys?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jan-03 AT 11:25 PM (EST)]Why are you going to the dealer????????? I've got 33 10.50's
on my 97 Expy 5.4 with no problems..... SuperSwamper TSL's rides great and looks crazy mean.....!!!
97Expy 5_4,
In regards to the 33/10.50 SS'
What type of lift (if any) or wheel backspacing was required to fit that type of meat under the Expy?
Do you have any clearance issues? Did they trash the gas mileage, or not so bad?
I would LOVE to see a picture of that rig, sounds mean!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jan-03 AT 11:24 PM (EST)]I am currently running 33-12.5 BFG muds and had to install a three inch body lift right away. I drove for two days without the lift and wasn't able to turn more than half of my normal radius. The tires are plenty agressive in the mud and ride quiet and smooth.
11_20gt,
Once you installed the body lift, the truck was able to turn the wheels lock to lock without contact problems?
Did you replace the wheels as well, I have the 17" alum. stockers on mine, and am looking for the best route to upgrade tires.
A) keep the 17" wheels, and purchase BFG's to fit ($$$)
B) replace the wheels with 16" customs, and enjoy the less expensive tires.
