I have a 79 F250 4 wheel drive it has no lift and I am considering new wheels and tires.
I know I am looking at some 16 x 8 wheels to go with a set of 285 75 16 cooper tires. The wheels I am looking at come in 4.25" and 2.5" backspace. Will either of these clear the front disc brakes and work with my truck?
They will clear the brakes no problem, it is the outer tie rods which are usually the issue. I would go with the 2.5" backspace but I don't know of many wheels available with that minimal of backspacing. What brand are they?
I'm running 33 x 12.50 with 4.25" backspacing on a 10" rim and mine poke out about 2 Inches. Mine don't rub anything at full cut.
If my math is right that 285 is ~11.25" wide. It seems like the 2.5's would throw almost 8" out away from the hub which would ultimately poke a a decent amount of tire out past the wheel arch. I guess if that's what you're going for knock yourself out. Not my taste though.

Agreed, if you can use the 4" backspace will I would do it. As far as 2.5" backspace, while it definitely will be plenty clear of the tie rod it will stick out further possibly requiring fender flares. A wheel with that low of backspacing would most likely by a reverse drop center wheel and I'm not aware of anyone making them.

I've seen guys do find wheels like that for mini-trucks where poking wheels are the in thing. Couldn't tell you who made em'.
The wheels with the 2.5" backspace are pro comps. I have been told that the recomended backspace is 3.5" but, I can't seem to find a simple black steel wheel with that backspace.
