the starter is about to grind it to the ground..........
any idea where i start to repair this cool 4wd ?
i had this bronco on a garage loft and when i looked under the truck i noticed that from the front bumper to the rear bumper that there are absolutly no dings or scraches on any of the engine, trans, or shilded gas tank ! and not one single dent on any of these under parts !
so it is in great shape...........except for the starter.......it is a 83 xlt with a 351w & a c-6 transmission.........any ideas where i might start to get the starting in shape..........
Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate info. we can muster.
First off, does it start the truck or just grind?
By "grind" I am going to assume you mean it sounds as though the teeth of the gears are not meshing when you try to turn the engine over. Start by making absolutely certain the starter is mounted securely. Check that the bolts holding it to the engine are torqued down properly. Other possibilities include worn or damaged flywheel ring gear or "bendix" gear (as many folk refer to it) in the starter. A starter that has engagement issues has the potential to only partially engage the bendix gear causing the teeth to wear or even shear off. If you suspect this may be the problem you can remove the starter to inspect the gears.
That is something I can not speak to... I would have to defer to anyone here who might have that information at their disposal.
An option that might assist would be to take a measurement from the mounting holes to the centerline of the flywheel gear and compare with a measurement of the same for the starter. The trick of course would be to take said measurement with the starter gear pulled into the proper position. This should at least tell you if the alignment between the two gears is off.
Are their any shims between the starter and the block? Quite often there usualy are, if some one else replaced the starter and left these shims out that could put the starter to close to the fly wheel and make a lot of noise also. This very difficult to diagnose over the internet.
I had the same problem on my 90 bronco when it came out of the tranny shop. The starter was making a terrible grinding noise, so we shimmed it. I dont remember what I used, it was like 4 or 5 years ago, but it did the trick.
