serious brake issue, PLEase HElp!!

Goin down the road hauling the kubota i hear a small pop in the front of the truck, not really thinking about it, i kept on toodaling along. come time to slow down, thank goodness for a manual, i stood on the brake pedal hard as i could to get any results. not to mention the 45* 3x5 limestone driveway i had to come down. Is this probably the vacuum pump? mechanic friend of mine says tha he thinks that is it, but he also says he's not a diesel mechanic, so no guarantees. Any thoughts, suggestions, test ideas? this is just another bit in a crappy day...

did i mention my selector valve switched, by itself, over to an empty tank in the middle of US59 this morning, a hundred miles from home? IS IT BED TYME YET?????

+1 on that. This is the most likely issue.

Otherwise, check your brake fluid reservior for lost fluid. If one or both of the halfs is empty, you will have to crawl under the truck and find the wet patch where the line popped.

belt is still on vac pump. oh yeah, i forgot to mention the brake fluid is to the top of the resivor. it normally is about 1/4 inch below the top, and now is a hair higher than the screen in the filler hole...

Another quick way to check the vac. pump is to turn the heater on, if the air only comes out the defrost when the selector is on the floor position, that indicates low vaccume.

Vacuum Problem

Sure sounds like a vacuum problem or Brake Booster Problem.

Does the vacuum pump pulley still turn when you take the belt off?

Check for any oil around the pump diaphram to see if the pump has been leaking oil. The pump bearings run in a sealed oil bath which usually leaks out as the pump seals wear or the diaphram fails eventually causing the pump to seize up.

Have you checked your vacuum hose between the pump and the Brake Booster?

My Ford Popped a brake line while I was towing a trailer. After that I replaced all of the lines.

Would be a good time to get a vacuum guage to test for vacuum at the booster. If you have none try it right at the pump. If you have it at the pump start testing every other line for a leak.

belt is still on vac pump. oh yeah, i forgot to mention the brake fluid is to the top of the resivor. it normally is about 1/4 inch below the top, and now is a hair higher than the screen in the filler hole...
Are you saying the level is higher than normal now in the reservoir, or are you saying its almost at the bottom? If you keep pumping the brakes does the fluid go down? If it does keep going down that would indicate a leak in the line, then follow advice of David85.

It doesn't matter if the core is bypassed or not, just turn on the heater fan and try to get it to blow air out of the vents or floor. Defrost is the default position if there is no vacumn in the system. This will tell you whether or not your vacumn pump is functioning.

Turn the AC on, will it blow out anyplace other than the defrost vents?

Were you using the brakes when you heard the pop?

i think i had just let off of the brakes dave. The a/c never bobbled kept blowing cold out of the dash vents all the way home... its been to hot to have them blow out anywhere other than the dash (10:15 and its still in the upper 80s)...

My defrost should be controlled by the slide lever on the dash shouldnt it? it is attached to a cable that runs to the damper... ??? + when the cable comes loose behind the control and i have to reattach it, i do it with the motor off and it blows out of any setting i put it on...

Could something in the pedal linkage have broken?

Must be different on the 87.
On my 86 you vary the temp with the blend door, controlled by a cable.

Where the air blows out, defrost, dash vents, mix or floor is controlled by a vacuum motor.

When the vacuum pump dies, or you spring a vacuum leak, the air only blows out the defrost vent against the windshield.

my 88 is not vacuum controlled either. when the pump went, the ac still worked fine through the dash.

you will need to get a vacuum gauge and check the vacuum. if under 17 inches, it is new pump time. but it sounds more like your brake power booster went
