Question 9" Axle re-drilling???

I started this here;
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...0-9-axles.html

...but have NOT had much luck...so...here we go...

Anyone had their axle flanges redreilled for a new bolt pattern???

Thinking about having my 5 X 51/2 axle flanges changed to matched my
new front IFS that are 5 X 4 1/2.

Is it neccessary to fill the old stud holes?

Do they need to be balanced afterwords?

Can the old stud holes just be "left open"??? (lightening holes?)

THANKS in advance...

Check the cost VS ordering a new set of axles from Moser or Strange (available from Jegs, Summit) The have street axles for ~ 300.00 a set already drilled for several different bolt patterns, choose your pattern and press in the studs. Change your mind? Knock the studs out and replace.

I had mine done at Quick Performance in Ames, Iowa. I took them the old axles and a new set of brake drums. They redrilled both to 4-1/2" bolt pattern. They drilled and tapped them and they use an Allen bolt for the stud. On mine, we didn't need to fill any of the original holes in the axle flange, some may/will need a hole filled depending on the design. With 2 new drums, drilling, removing original bearings and all new bearings, seals and retainers it ran me around $400 total. I chose to put new drums on so I would get the maximum time out of the operation. Mine has worked great so far. No problems and highly recommended.

Good luck,
SPark

I do them all the time for customers stuff as well as the mosier axles in my truck they were 4 3/4 and I needed 4 1/2. Drilled the drums as well using the same setup.

I Set them up in the bridgeport and super spacer find the BC and start drilling not a big deal at all. Get a good bit and turn it slow crouding it so it cuts and does not rub or you will kill the bit in under 10 revs. Flanges are pretty hard so they are a little hard to drill if you have never done it but not too bad.

Talking Hhhmmmmmm......

...I started lookin' at Dutchman Motorsports in the FIRST place...

...thinkin' someone might want my original 28-spline axles
and 11" drums...they are in good shape...

Dutchman has a nice price on a complete set-up;

9" Ford type housing ends-Package=$370/pair
Includes; Axles, studs, bearings, & HD retainers
Your choice of bolt patterns & stud size

Seems fair to me...I already have a disc brake kit for the 9" ready
to install...

Or for the same money you could have gotten a brand new set of Moser axles with the flange predrilled with 3 different bolt patterns, and not had to tie the truck up waiting for the axles to be returned from the machinist, or worrying if the original axles were not already stressed and/or cracked.

Question AX-le-mania...

Hey AX...not sure I'm followin' ya...but that's nuthin' new for me......

I was referring to the post by mixup...for an additional $75.00 bones...ya know?

Thats whats whats got me wondering about MY axles...they are 39 years old now...I'm sure they are a little bit "tired"...

Oh...I'm not worried about the "tie the truck up waiting" part...it's scattered ALL OVER lower Michigan......

PLEASE tell me more about this Moser-thing...did I miss "something" ?

I thought I had commited The Moser, Currie, FRPP, and Strange Catalogs to memory!!!

ThankX again brother......

Don't forget to add shipping on top of the $75 bones. Every penny counts and I can use that $75 somewhere else. For a regular driver I don't think the stock axles are going to be a problem even though they are old.

Question ..........

...I hear ya......I already wore-out a quarter doin' the coin-toss thing...

I'm not really good at darts anymore......so that only leaves me with
an intellegent adult-type decision......

Figures...just my luck...

Of course every one I called so far says the same thing...just send 'em to Currie or Moser...

Anyone know about the spline-end of the axles...I don't mean changing the spline-count...

...but is there any type of re-hab that can be done?

-

...re-hab...startin' to sound like a cheap reality show on cable-TV...
