On my 2001 Super Duty 4x4 with the 5.4 auto trans. when I let it set for a while(even just over night) when You put it in gear for the first time it nocks about five times. The first time it done it I thouhgt it was the engine. I had my foot on the brake and put the truck in drive. It started nocking. I looked at the oil pres. and it was fine. I put the truck in neutral and it quit nocking. Put it in drive and it nocked about 3 more times and quit. It only seems to do it on initial engagement of the trans. It nocks about 6-8 times and then quits. It never slips or hesitates or anything else abnormal. The nock does increase with engine speed and sometimes has a bit of a squeak with it.
Could the torque converter bepartialy locked? The truck has 116,000 miles on it. I have only had the truck for 1200 or so of theose miles so I have no idea what has been done to the tranny(flush, filter, fluid). I was hoping some one had been through this, but if not I will prolly just drive it and do the routine tranny fluid flush and change at the next scheduled interval. I think that is at 120,000 if I remember right.
maybe the slip yoke needs greased? what cab style do u have? when u say knock? does it sound like someone knocking on the door or like a pushrod motor with no oil? ??

I have the Supercab? 2 regular doors 2 suicide doors. It sounds more like a rod than on the door. It does it even if you have your foot on the brake so the drive line isn't spinning. You hold the brake, put it in gear, knock begins(still no movement of vehicle foot on brake), give a little gas still holding brake with no movement of vehicle and knock gets faster, let off gas knock gets slower, put in nuetral knock quits. Never letting vehicle move. Knock acts the same with foot off brake and vehicle moving(sound and frequency and everything)
I figured this out over several mornings because like I said it only knocks 6-8 times per morning. Then it won't do it again until the next morning.
I will get under there and look at the slip yoke and carrier bearing( if it has one) but I don't think that is it since it does it without the drive shaft turning.
Knock sounds very familiar but I just can't place it. All I have ever been around is pre 1990 until this trcuk so I am learning loads. Help guys I need you. Thanx
start with your fluid. mark kovalsky has a write up on flushing trans fluid on the 4r100. im not sure but i believe that the 01 has a drain plug on the torque converter. take the rubber plug off the bottom of the trans by the bellhousing and see if you cant locate that plug. btw the trans pan has a reusable gasket. but get a new filter!
I don't think a fluid change will help. It could be a cracked flex plate, though I don't know why it only does it on the first engagement. Will it knock in reverse, or only in drive?

I have never noticed in reverse but I will try that the next couple mornings and see if I can get it to do it in reverse.
