How easily do the brake pads need to slide back and forth in the clips? I got them in but they are pretty tight. They are tight enough that I am installing them in the slide pin bracket and putting that in the caliper. Is that okay?

You should be able to move them with your hand.
Fitting snugly is a good thing. If they are loose the brakes will rattle on every bump.

OK, so I got the worse side done. But when I moved to the other side, the caliper mount bolts were WAY too tight. Much tighter than the other side. I tried all day, all sorts of ways (I don't have air tools) to no avail. I do have a friend with impact tools, so I'll get to him next week. I guess when I got a new hub (wheel bearing) last summer, the mechanic did the final tightening with an impact wrench, which I have heard is a no-no. I guess this is why.

Got a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar?
Put a pipe on the end of it to extend it and it will come loose.
