Are the axle's shafts , left and right the same length in a 79 f150 / 9 in. rear ? the reason I ask is shortly after I bought a used f150 something gave way in the rear towing my trailer . I pulled the axles out and found they were the same length and one was stripped about 3/8 of an inch off of the end . I thought one was supposed to be longer than the other ? thanks jim
Is the rear end a limited slip unit?? I've seen one do exactly that after the owner replaced the seals and bearings and only got the axle in the first set of splines on the left side, thinking it was in he tightened the retaining bolts and this made the axle press on the second set of splines. It went 1000 miles towing a trailer before it let go and did the same damage you have. In a limited slip there are 2 sets of spline the axles passes through, so when reinstalling the axle it can take some time to get both splines lined up. It's a rare thing and I've only heard of this once but you never know.
