My early 2003 (Build date 11/02) doesn't show a fuse for the heated mirrors. My friend has one with a build date of 03/03 and the owners manual shows a fuse for the mirrors. Any ideas about why this would be, or is it just a mid model change? Thanks Jim
I know there was an engine change that occurred somewhere around October '02. That's when they switched from the 7.3L diesel to the hot rod 6.0L diesel. When the 6.0L became available is when they started the integrated turn signals in the tow mirrors. I'm not sure if that's when they started heating them too or not (my early '03 was built in July '02 with the 7.3L, tow mirrors without turn signals or heat). A November build date puts you right around that change. If you have a gas truck, there may have been a surplus of non-heated mirrors that went on the gas trucks.
I would check the VIN with your dealership to find out exactly what you have (or you can request a build sheet from Ford for your VIN).
Thanks Brian 42: It is a 7.3, without turn signals in the mirrors. It does have a heated mirror. I don't think that it works though. My Owners Manual does not show a fuse. My friends later 6.0 shows a fuse for the heated mirror. I have the build sheet, THANKS TO PARTS GUY ED. Just got me to thinking. Thanks a lot. Jim
I don't think you have heated mirrors. I think they started heating them with the upgraded ones (with the turn signal) that they started slapping in the 6.0L. I think that if you got the turn signaled mirrors you had heat, otherwise you didn't. I think the connectors between the two mirros are different too. I've seen adapters to go between the plugs that we have in the door and the plugs that are for the turn signal, heated towing mirrors.
HHmmm...that's an interesting point. Mine don't say heated on the mirror. That sounds like a question only a field trip to the parts counter of a dealership can answer for you. If you do go, I'm curious to know what they say.
the fuse for the mirrors is fuse number 104 or 105 i pull mine out when not needed. if you have heated mirrors you should have the defroster icon on the mirror itself.
UPDATE: Pulled mirror today, and found that the mirror had been replaced. Heat wires were not hooked up, and remote control wires had been spliced. Applied 12 volts to wires for about 2 minutes, checked with a temp gun , and still no heat. Ohmed out at about 1 1 /2 to 2 OHMS. I assume the heater is bad. Jim
Anyone know what the resistance should be on the heating element? I checked again an the resistance is 1.75 on the 10K scale. This would seem like enough for the element to be good. I had it wired directly to the battery through a switch. Maybe I didn't wait long enough for it to heat. Checked for heat with a temp gun as mentioned above.
Thanks to all who reply. Jim
Hooked up my 6amp battery charger to the heated mirror today, and I believe it works.
I left it on for a good 5 minutes and it was drying the dew off. I raised the glass temp from 47 deg. to 54 degrees. I think I will put a switch in and run it manually. The charger only pulled 1 amp when I hooked it up. I think it should have a bigger fuse than that.
What size fuse does the factory panel use? Any replies appreciated. Jim
