i have a 1983 F-250 that had a 302 with a 3 speed C-6 and i swapped for the 300. The moter was rebuilt just before i bought it. Some how it got 2 bent push rods and valves. i replaced them and did a valve job but i have never had any power out of it. i have 35" tires and stock 356 gears and i get 10 mpg. The big problem is that the truck runs fine for the first 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, execpt no power, but after that it bogs down and has NO POWER, barely runs. I believe it is the carburetor but i have rebuilt it twice with no change. Any suggestions.
sounds kinda like a timing/ignition issue. if you have had the carb rebuilt twice and it still has no power. also check your compression. hope this helps I have a sick one right know myself
The only thing I can see on the carb is if someone screwed with the jets at one point and they're too small.
Other than that, it definitely sounds like your spark. Maybe the vacuum advance isn't working? Check compression and vacuum, as others have recommended.
1° perform a valve clearance by colapsing lifters, correct if necesary
2° perform a compression test, repair if requiered
3° check timing line at damper, make a new one if necesary
4° check/adjust timing without vacum line to 10° BTDC
5° check centrufugal advance at distributor, recurve if required
6° check spark, is strong enought? cables, rotor, cap, coil, module, etc
7° Intake restriction, air filter
8° Exhaust restriction, mufler, pipes, catalitic converter
9° try a different carburetor
