well after 270k i think my injectors are wearing out..... long story short the old girl just doesnt seem to have the get up and go on hills the way it did, its been a slow degrade in the last year. now dont get me worng it still runs good, just not liek it did, the engine doesnt sound quite right and my boost numbers are dropping. all of the typical things have een checked and cleared, fuel and oil systems up to par. no boost leaks.etc etc etc. all things point to my injectors, they are all origonal with the exception of me re-oringing them for the first time at 210k. not sure what the actual life expectancy is of them but i think they are ready for a rebuild, sucks cause i spent all my money on the charger....lol i did get them to run a little better and even got some boost numbers bcak tonigh......you guys are gonna give me hell for this but it has bought me some time. poped the fuel fitler out and ran 3 qts of atf through the motor. fired it up and revved her hard. did the best i could to get as much atf through the injectors instead of mixed with fuel. after that i took it out on the road and ran it hard as crap for quite a bit (20 or 30 miles) brought it back, changed to a fresh fuel filter (the old one was new and not clogged up) on the test drive i could tell a difference in power and my boost numbers seemed to be back up to where they used to be so i hooked the trailer up and lugged about 6k around, its not perfect but it runs alot better then it had been so hopefully i bought myself some time to try and get some money saved up for jim to do me some injectors...
now of course i have to end this by saying "i do not reccomemnd any of you try this at home" and if you do done t complain to me if something goes wrong....lol its an old school trick for cleaining injectors on big trucks and farm tractors. i figure what the heck, it works good on the tractors so i will try it out on my truck, it needed injectors anyway so what did i have to lose? besides the atf has plenty of lube to it and i like the detergent value it has to try and "clean up" my injectors. it aint a true fix but for now it definatly made a big difference in my truck.
let me know when you do then. i need orings sometime. decided to hold on injectors etc until after college. that is if you can take orings off and still get rebuild for same price. im clueless in that department. but after college im gonna take out a small loan and do the truck completely. see how she does pullin then. lol cant wait
Nothing wrong with running ATF in the fuel, as long as it's NEW ATF!!
Seriously, give SeaFoam, or whatever it's called, a try. I repeatedly hear how this stuff does wonders. It's a fuel additive. I don't have an old poor running truck to try it out for myself.
oh yeah, i used my old burnt metal filled atf......lmao...... thats funny, it was new ford type f as that is what i used to run in the charger when it was an automatic. i may try some sea foam, is that to be poured in the tank or in the fiilter housing like i did?
If i was to run sea foam. I'd not run it strait in a diesel.
Pour a splash or 2 in the filter housing, and then the rest into the tank as an aditive.
I'd mix it in the filter houseing just for that first nice little clean.
Yea, i'm not sure what it will do.
I'd mix it strong compared to the recomendation on the can, i always did in my gasser.
But i'm not sure how it will effect the combustion in a diesel.
No experience with seafoam myself, just have heard a lot of good things about it. Lost a lot of business when guys were going to send their injectors in, then tried Seafaom and said the truck runs great and they changed their mind.
???
I don't have an old poor running truck to try it out for myself.
that must suck LOL. i will loan you one anytime you need to try it out haha.
Oh, I've had my share, I'm just in good shape right now.
Im going to put a quart of ATF in my tank and some seafoam afterward.... good idea or not? Ill run the **** out of the truck when I do it too, just like normal...
after my experiment i just dumped 4 qts of atf in the 1/2 tank of fuel and have been on the road all day, the more i am driving it the better it is feeling. i am going to go shop for some sea foam tomarrow if i get the chance.
I just recently was asking about seafoam and if anybody had used it here, no body could say they had so I gave it a shot a couple weeks ago. Filled up my tanks with 1 can split between the 2 (kinda light in mix but fair) Then loaded up the camping gear and drove from denver to leadville approx 200 miles and over 7000' in elevation changes, up to around 13k+ at the top getting near tree line so the air was kinda thin and the grades reach points where theyre 10%+ spent 2 days there and headed back the truck did 20MPG (all highway- sort of) and never came out of 5th gear except to gear down on the downhill slide. Now not that my injectors were really that bad but Id have to say it looks to have helped a little to ensure they were firing at the best and may have simply helped the fuel mix. I dont know, but wasnt that expensive on an experiment and was some of the best mileage Ive ver seen out of my truck.
I really want to try it in my oil on my truck. I know the oil setup will be clean when I'm done. It did such a good job on the oil on my f150, it was honey brown till 5k miles.
