T18/T19

Can someone please tell me how to tell these two transmissions apart. I'm looking for a T19 with about a 4 or 5 to 1 ist gear.
Thanks, and have a happy holiday. Bob

T18/T19

I'm not sure how to tell them apart by looking at them, but the T-19 is a heavier-duty transmission and has a synchronized 1st gear while the T-18 doesn't. They both should have the low first gear you're looking for. Hope this helps.

I think (about 75% sure) that the T-19 has reverse over to the right & down like a NP435. The T-19 top cover is cast iron. I have seen one in a 1976 F150 4x4 and one in a 1979 F250 4x4.

Visit www.advanceadapters.com for more info.

T18/T19

I just pulled out of my truck what I think is a T-18. It is all cast iron, a very heavy sucker!!! The reverse on it is to the right and down. I do remember reading somewhere that the main difference between the T-18 and T-19 is the 19 has a syncro 1st gear. Advance adapters also told me that there is a difference in input shaft length between the two. The Borg-Warner trannies were used in Jeeps and no telling how many other makes of vehicles as well. I am sure Advanced Adapters can give you alot better info than I can on this subject.

I think I've confirmed how to tell a T18 from a T19. The T19 has 2 PTO covers, the T18 one. Also, if the trans is out of the truck, the T19's 1st gear is about 5.5 to 1 or a 4.? to 1 depending on the use? Bob

T18 (early style) will have basic case & shift cover casting that begins with: T18- ???. T18 late style will have basic casting #'s that begin with: 1301- ???. T19 basic case & cover casting# starts with: 1309-???

T18 (late style) has aluminum shift forks with plastic inserts. T19 used in ford trucks has a irregular shape to the shift cover (if you view shape of main case from top of trans.). T19 has cast iron shift forks--so does early style T18.
New Process 435 has aluminum shift cover & PTO aperature on r/h side (for ford applications). Many 435 N/P trans. were used in F-500, F600 & F700 applications. These units usually have a brake drum on rear of trans. & have different front mounting on main case & 1 3/8" input shaft diameter. Some internal components on Large chassis N/P 435 can be used in small chassis N/P 435. Caution: large chassis N/P 435 has a taller top cover; however, all of the forks & rails are the same as shorter trunion cover (used in F100, F150, F250 & F350).

I pulled the shifter out of my f250 4speed t19 and cant get it back in rirgh. Does the tranny have to be in Neutral, and how can you see the fork positions through the small hole ?

Yes, you want the trans in neutral when you re-install the shifter. If you look down in the case, you will see how to move the shift linkage to get it to neutral, I did it by trial and error. You will not see the fork possitions, only the shifter/fork interface; they should all line up. Study the shifter and figure out how they work and you will see it. Maybe someone can snap a pic. Sorry, it's been over a year since I went thru this fun on my T-19. One word of caution: be very careful not to loose the locating pin for the shifter. The pin essentially prevents the shifter from rotating in the cup. It is in a 1/4" hole thru the cup where the ball of the shifter goes (facing the engine?) and can easily fall into the trans, mine did. If it does, you can get it with a magnet or by removing one of the PTO covers -no big deal.
