Can anyone tell me the brand of ball joints I should be looking for? I couldn't find a brand by searching, must be getting old ! If I decide to have them done, what is a fair price to R&R them?
I use Autozoo in house brand (Duralast) with great success in the fleet of trucks they usually start wearing out at tge 150k mark but still good considering the punish they go thru. Make sure you rent or buy a ball joint press, makes it fast to change them out, I normally take 2.5-3 hrs to do both sides.
XRF was the favorite brand here for a while (back when this place was a little more populated) If you're going to a shop, you're really at the mercy of said shop for brand name though. That way they at least will stand behind their products.
A 4 wheel drive shop might have more options or higher quality parts available than the regular mechanic.
No idea on the price, but I'd guess high enough you'll be shocked. We took a work truck to the Ford house today to try and get a key for the spare tire winch. They noticed the rear pinion seal was leaking and offered to fix it for only $350.
I just put the XRF's on my truck and so far so good, to early to tell how the longevity is. The local driveline shop installed them along with new u-joints and seals up front (didn't have the time to do it myself) think it cost me about $600 in labor, I supplied the parts.
I don't know first-hand for the F-250, but when I researched that question for my F-150, a lot of people recommended Moog because they have Zerk fittings so you can grease them, whereas the OEM ones lack grease fittings (which I believe is why one of mine failed after the boot allowed water to get in, causing rust and eventually lash). FWIW...
who wants to work that hard when they are retired!
It is really easy and you can have a shop press them in for $10 each if you choose to. It also gives you a chance to check brakes, change brake fluid (get speed bleeders) and clean up things.

Just a thought!
Mike, at my age, it gets more and more difficult to justify kneeling/groveling like a pagan around a vehicle. I may end up doing them myself (I've done ball joints many times), but I really doubt it because the money is easier to come up with than having mom looking at me like a grease-covered madman. This would be the first time I have ever taken this truck to someone to do any work and I know the shop well. Waiting on a quote...I may change my mind when I see the quote though !
pn 2020314. It's complete with all the parts you should replace. OE manufacturer so it's gotta be decent, right? Check it out.
Geography is a problem buy maybe we can do a ball joint-a-thon with you and Chet somewhere convenient? I may be able to lay hands on a ball press kit with the correct Ford adapters.
That would be nice if we were all a little closer. I'm going to do it all except tie-rod ends. They seem to be okay. Doing the hub on drivers side because I did the passenger side couple years ago. Had to have Ford do it because I was going out of town and didn't have time. Early to late model. Also brake lines and rotors, etc..

I've decided to have it done...$688 complete w/ thrust alignment. It would be fun to do all our trucks together and I appreciate the thought, I need to take a nap now !
