After driving the "other" truck for a longgg time, I decided to tear into the true beast. It has been getting 10-12mpg lately and just doesn't have much power. However, I was truely amazed as to wait lied beneath the oil sludge.
Why you might ask? I have held this truck to the floor for half an hour every day pulling trailors or just flying up hills empty. I have been running 50/50WMO in it. The EGT's would get way too hot any amount of time I would put it to the floor. After taking that gauge out and putting it in the dodge, I turned it up a couple turns, continued beating the hell out of it. Now I ask you, why is a piston not melted! I was just going to put a little beater diesel I had laying around in it but now I am having second thoughts. I would like to see how the cummins has held up but I am not so certain I want to see it I do not have the money to rebuild it but after seeing all the gaskets tore to hell I want to know what the best gaskets to get are. This thing leaks about a quart a week so I am going to fix that. The valve covers are rusted and so is the rocker arms, not sure what I need to do to fix that. I am not so sure on compression I need to check it, see if it will be a complete waste to NOT rebuild it. But yes, truly amazed
Yeah I don't know if I knocked that rust in there or if it was like that. The other side was a little bit interesting. I think I found why it has no power, barely starts, and has a lot of hissing out the exhuast.
The first and last exhaust valves dont look like they have opened in a while. I could be wrong. I haven't tested pushing on them yet. We shall see.
I notice you did not remove the intake or valley pan, what ever you do DO NOT reuse the valley pan as it is a "once and done gasket", it is NOT reusable.
I use Felpro gaskets and I'm happy with their quality and performance.
Yeah I just wanted to see the pistons mainly. Didn't want to get involved with the IP just yet. I am planning on replacing all the gaskets in it since all of them seem to be leaking or about to leak. The valve cover gasket was so broke down that the bolts were finger tight.. That might have been where most of the quart a week went out but I am still going to change all of the seals, then run synthetic. Most of the rods are rusted badly though, and the ones that aren't have this sludge stuff all over them. Guess I need to just start dumping degreaser all over it. Unless you guys got a better idea?
