Any advice on where to get a tachometer for a 1996 4.9 L engine? I have a stick shift. The truck is an Eddie Bauer edition. It does not have a tachometer and I shift based on speed. Was this common in all trim levels? Should there be a law against selling stick shift vehicles with no tach?
Any suggestions for aftermarket? Any advice on installing one?
Don't go aftermarket, it's a lot of work and it will never look stock. Get a gauge cluster from a 1996 F-series truck. You can take both clusters apart and swap the gauges you need into one cluster. Keep your existing PSOM to retain your odometer reading.
Thanks for your advice. Where can I get a 96 instrument cluster? Search the junk yards? Did Ford run the wires for the tach to the instrument cluster already?
I pulled an instrument cluster out of a 300D once to replace the odometer. I thought it was kind of a PITA.
Junkyard is the best bet. Make sure you only get one from a 1996 - they look the same but don't interchange. Yes, Ford ran the wires for the tach regardless of whether there was a tach or not. You just plug it in and it goes.
I never pulled apart a 1992-96 dash before, but the 87-91 ones come apart really easy.
Junk yard source is ok but if it's from a V8 it will have to be rewired. There was a write up some time ago either here or the FSP Forum on how to do that.
New gauges can be had from LMC...but they are very proud of their products.
Yeah, it will have to be rewired. The truck I had before this 1991 Bronco with a 300 was a 1988 F-150 with a 351. That truck had a tach in the gauge cluster so I swapped out gauge clusters, but the tach was inaccurate, I'm sure because it was from a V8. But since the wires were already run into the dash for a tach, even though the bronco was not equipped with one. I just wired in an MSD laser gauge tach and put the old instrument cluster back in. It just depends if you have to have the tach in the gauge cluster or don't mind mounting it somewhere else. I don't mind at all having the tach sit right up by the windshield. I kind of prefer it actually.
Me either. There have been posts in the past about this and someone did come up with the wiring rearrangement on the back of the Tach to make it work but that has been quite a while back. I have an instrument cluster with a Tach but I use an aftermarket with the switch set for 6 cylinder running and clamped to the steering wheel column.
It does not need to be rewired one can be used from a 94 or 95 but abs wont work it is acurate cuase at 3000 it sounds like its gonna explode hard to find 96 clusters found one for my 94 right away finnaly found one for dads 96 picking it up this weekend $60 easy to take apart but take your time took me a hour and a half you can pm me if you have any questions it goes 92and 93, 94 and 95, 96 is seperate
the 80-86 may need to be rewired but 87+ wont (i know 92-96 wont). i did this swap on several vehicles including my own 93 F-150. the cluster came out of a 92 BKO with a 302, its all pre-wired for the 92+ and im pretty sure on the 87-91.
