I just bought a new '08 F350 xl 6.4 for my company. When we are pulling 12 - 14,000 pounds on a gooseneck, the truck is a slug starting off. It's o.k. when on the highway, but it's horrible off the line.
We have three 6.0s in our fleet and two dodges (5.9 and 6.7), they all pull so much better off of the start. Is this normal for this truck? If it is, I'm really disappointed.
I took it to a dealer and he ran diagnostics on it...said there was nothing wrong.
oh yeah, it may need a new flash if its really bad, but before i took the dpf off mine it was the same way. it acted like you had to MAKE it go and even without towing it just seemed really slow, like it had the torque but just wouldn't go fast. about the only way to fix that is put a tuner on it and or delete the dpf.
If I have our 14K fifth wheel trailer hooked up, there is a 2 to 3 second lag if I start from a stop and mash it. When the power comes on, the truck shakes, the hitch creaks and pops, the front of the truck raises up in the air and we're off, big time. Something does not sound right.
Is it broken in? Get it looked at, take a diesel tech. for a ride.
my truck is strong as a ox. Pulls like a monster. Like it was mentioned earlier you get 1 or 2 second delay and then boom your pulling like a banchee. I've pulled 10-12K much better than any 7.3 ever could.
when I first got mine I couldn't believe the amount of power it had compared to my 7.3. Felt like I could move mountains. Wasn't a speed demon but has torque up the wazoo. Then I deleted the dpf and tuned it, and I now have speed and torque. I pull a tandem axle trailer with 22,000lb lift on occasion and she pulls like a champ. You may need a reflash or just a tech who really knows his diesels. Seems like that's half the battle.
As far as needing to get reflashed...I just took it in to a local dealer (the one that said there's no problem) and he did not mention any flashes needed. Should he have suggested it? I need to do something.
At the risk of sounding stupid I have a question. I just 2 days ago bought a 2009 F-250 with the Powerstroke, I must say this is the first diesel I have ever owned so I really don't know what dpf is. I have not yet pulled anything, However I will not be pulling anything as large as what ya'll are talking about our trailer is about 9500lbs and I have been doing it with a 1/2 ton truck so you can probably figure out why I bought a diesel, but I was just wandering if this should be something I should watch for as time goes on.

Not to worry, that truck will pull 9500 lbs. up a telephone pole if you put studded tires on it. You will be one happy camper on your first pull.
tex id go to a new dealership asap, doesn't sound like they know what they are doing nor do they really wanna help ya.
nad you really dont have much to worry about if you bought it new its prob up to date if not they have been pretty good about mailing me when it needed recall or computer updates. if you have problems just ask on here or listen to what everyone else is saying.
The 6.4 is always going to have a couple of seconds lag time at takeoff. It is part of the emissions control. The 6.4 will never take off like the 6.0 will. However, if it is more than a couple of seconds than something is probably wrong.
Was going to ask about milage too? The more miles the better these monsters tow. My 2008 350 XL out tows my old boss' 2003 350 7.3. Like comparing a Yugo to a Mustang. Couple second lag also very normal. I tow 12500 lbs about 6 times a week in the mountains... if it aint rain'n shes a whalin. It don;t wag this dog ! It did it to my 99 f250 tho.
