I have just over 1,000 miles on it. Will this truck ever run as good as the 6.0? I was actually hoping for an improvement over the 6.0. I am really disappointed with how much better our dodges pull than this ford. I much prefer the ford truck over the dodge, but they definitely pull better.
I have to say I like the idea of the Cummins ISB straight 6 under the hood better than the complex dual-turbo V8 we have, but this motor is no slouch!
This thing moves my truck around much better than an 8,000 lb brick has any right to...sounds like either you're not used to the hesitation or something may not be right with it.
BTW, mine has 1700 miles on it, and I've never thought it was slow or weak...but then again, I've never driven a 6.0 either.
I think the 6.4 will out do the 6.0 in both towing capabilites and comfort and ride. May not get the 6.0 off the line in a 0-60 shootout but then again if that is your goal...get a car.
Ok southtex. I went out this morning and perfected something for you to try, at your own risk of course, in a parking lot or something paved.
Get engine to operating temp. Put your left foot on the brake pedal, VERY firmly. Push down the accelerator enough to attempt to get the motor to rev up to about 2000 rpm (I could not get that high) and hold it for about 5 seconds. When you count 6, let go of the brake and push the throttle down the rest of the way.
I was very surprised to find that I smoked my tires and they would have smoked for quite some time if I had not backed off. I have 94,500 on my odo and it's a SRW 250. If you have a dually, might be harder to burn out. I also have the 3.73 LS diff.
If you decide to run this procedure let us know how you feel about the 6.4. I know it's a shame that we have to do crazy stuff like this to get the engine to launch but the new diesels drive completely different than what you are used to. The engine is sort of like flying a B-2 stealth bomber, it will not run without a computer controlling all the systems in it, the stealth bomber can't be flown without computer input.
I can say i've driven both the 6.0 and 6.4 trucks. Both trucks crew cab but not sure what differential was in the 6.0 truck. The 6.0 is faster from a stop for the first 2 or 3 seconds then there's no question the 6.4 is much stronger. As posted earlier there is a built in delay until the turbos spool up to reduce smoke output thus saving the DPF. Comparing stock to stock or programmer to programmer the 6.0 can never make the power of the 6.4 engine. These trucks with a programmer are unbelieveable. Crewcab trucks can 14 seconds or less in the 1/4 mile and run over 100mph. Truely amazing.
southtex--whre in Texas are you? I took mine into a Ford dealer here in San Antonio to see about the jerk when I take off. (I need to post results on that thread). I liked the dealer' service for old F150 and Mustang, but when I first called, they said like 3-4 days just to look at the truck. I couldn't take it in then, but called back last week, and they said the "drivetrain" specialist could look at it the next morning. (What the...why didn't they tell me that before??)By 0900 (oops 9:00 am) they called and said nothing was wrong. They said they checked the slip joint, as I told them many suggested that was the problem. But, I beginning to think these big city dealers aren't as up on the big trucks as the country ones (sorry for long disseration to get to my point).
Hang in there dude...get it the right place, and I think they will figure it out...
There seems to be some inconsistency in how well these trucks run. There was a thread a while back that had mixed results on power between 6.0 and 6.4. Personally I think the initial hesitation is dangerous and it has almost caused me to get T-boned so now I wait until a semi and 4 school buses could pull in to traffic before I let off the brake.
Ruschejj - I have tried the boosted launch that you discussed only to get a few revolutions. No marks, no smoke, just a short squeal/chirp. Maybe my more aggressive 20" Goodyears (factory tires) just grip better than the 18" Conti's. I have even tried turning the wheel as I do this.
I agree about the lag being dangerous. We shouldn't have to power brake to pull into traffic. The Dodge in our fleet with the 6.7 (new emissions) has no lag and pulls harder. If Dodge can do it...why can't Ford?
just bought a 2009 f450 six speed and same thing no power. got 40,000 on it already and no change. truck is always packing max legal weight on the two axles. I get 13 mpg.
my old 2005 6.0l with the same weight is get 16.5mpg and it has 400,000 on it. pretty sad. and yes have tuner in both trucks.
Caprang, the only time I worked out that power brake/burn out was when I was on some very old blacktop pavement. Maybe that has something to do with it. Also, I don't think my rear end locked up so I was only spinning one wheel. I am running Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor 18" tires, have 55,000 miles on them and looks like they will be good for another 15,000 or so.
Here is a jab for you. Everything is better in the South, so it must apply to our trucks too! You know I am joking of course.
I have noticed some things about those who say there truck has awsome power and milage vs those who say that theirs is a guttless pig and terrible milage.
The people who say there is getting good milage seem to also seem more prone to say theirs has all kinds of power.
Those like me who have one that waits 5 sec before even moving from a dead stop, and can barley get out its own way get worse milage. Like 10 mpg empty or closer to 6mpg when towing 14-15,000lbs.
mine is a 2008 f-350 crew lwb 3.73 gears auto 4x4, nothing real different than other people. But yet a real let down.
Even tuned it still gets 10-12mpg, and puts out some decent power lots of smoke but just not quit what it should be for 275 extra to the ground. Can't complaine to hard I guess I do have more power now.
Ruschejj, I have been jealous from day one. Better power, better mileage, hmmm maybe moving south might be worth it. LOL
Got a friend that has a job 1 6.4 and he tells me all the time how much power it has, will smoke the tires, hard to keep it under 75 even on back roads, etc. So we agreed to swap trucks for a day to see what the other thinks in comparison. Since our opinions vary we will determine if its just our different perceptions or if its really in the trucks.

This swap I would be interested in. Would be interesting because I too don't have near the lag or lack of power that some have complained of.
I have owned an 04 6.0 crew cab 4 by and my buddy has a reg cab 2 wheel 6.4 when we raced he pulled me off the line but once my turbo spooled up I went passed him. These trucks seem to have no consistency at all.
