I have a 94 Explorer Sport and had the tranny rebuilt two weeks ago. We just finished up the install tonight and it won't go in to 4th and it kicks out of overdrive when you let out the clutch. Is this a common problem with rebuilt M5OD's? Does it have to come back out to fix? I'll call the shop that rebuilt it tomorrow. Just need to know if I should bother and look for another shop or not.
Sounds like they screwed up on the synchros. Or maybe the shift linkage.
Linkage should just need adjustment. synchros probably need to have tranny dropped.
If it is a reputable shop, I would have them fix it at their cost. This problem should have been caught on their test drive before handing it back to you.
Most reputable shops have some warranty and will have no problem making this right.
It was a carry out deal. I had pulled that M5OD 2 years ago when it had problems and replaced it with a C-5/4 and a doubler. So a lot had to be changed back. Crossmember, tunnel cover plate and shifters, driveshafts, ect..... I did call them this morning and they told me to drive it in. Just a few miles in town driving. It really did well in the gears I had. When I dropped it off the guy (owner maybe) said they would take care of it. I tried 4th several time on the way to the shop. Most of them just out of habbit. I didn't try overdrive. Thought maybe they'd pull the shifter and tunnel cover and see if they could go in through the top to fix it. I hope they can and get it back to me today.
