I recently bought a 2001 Exp XLT, w/5.4, 4wd, 3.31 rearend. What axle comes in the rearend of these trucks? And, since I want to add larger wheels (maybe 285/75-16 or 295/75-16's), I am considering having 3.73 gears installed, to keep the same relative gearing. Is it possible to have that done to this axle? Also, from what I read on this site, both of these tires should be able to fit under this truck w/o a lift (at least initially).
I believe that the rear end is a Sterling/Ford 9.75" , and the front diff is a reverse rotation 8.8". I also have the 3.31 gears in my Expy and will be changing them out when I lift the Expy, hopefully in 2004.
Question on gearing, tire size, and fuel economy. If I were to put a larger tire on my Expedition, say a 295-75/16 and then change my gears to a 3.73 so that I would have about the same relative gearing as what I started with (3.31), would the fuel exonomy also remain about the same? I know that larger tires would bring slightly more weight.
