My truck is a 1976 f100 300 I6 1 br carb 4 spd. I start her up, it feels a little rough it gets close to idle and dies, no spudder, just dies. It turns over but doesn't start, It will run if I keep giving it gas. I asked a couple friends they said it might be the carb and the accelerator pump. I checked the connection for the spark plug wires, vacuum lines, it's getting gas to the carb, they look good. So I think the friends may be right, am I looking in right direction to find the problem first of all and how do I tell if the accelerator pump is not working correctly? let me know if more info is needed. FTE is a great resource all input is appreciated. Thanks
Run the throttle and look down the carb if you see a stream of gas accel pump is working. You might check out the choke too. How fresh is the gas, old gas or gas with water in it can cause similar trouble.

It started up first turn this morning, I let it warm up tapped the gas and it kick down the rpm's. Tells me the choke is working. I get on the freeway, the truck starts to chug along like it is starving for fuel. I stepped into the gas peal more and ran a little better, but not much. I come to a stop (stop and go traffic) close to idle and it dies, does it to me two, three more times. Then like that it is running fine, a little rough but it would idle and accelerate, no chugging. Then a few minutes later it starts acting up again and it stayed like all the way to work. Thanks for the responses guys. I will see if I can get a gauge. Cool link, helpful. It has new gas and I will gave the carb and vacuum lines another going over looking for leaks. How about a rebuild kit, to early? Any other ideas on what may be causing the problem out there? Let me hear what you have to say. Thanks
Rebuild kit is always a good idea if it hasn't been done in a while since they're pretty easy and not very expensive ($25?) At least you'd know it's all fresh gaskets, if nothing else. Then, if the problem still persists, you can rule out the carb.
Also, have you changed the fuel filters? Generally, there's one in line out of the tank on the driver's side, and another going right into the carb.
I have not rebuilt the carb. Did a small tune up couple months ago change the filter at the carb, will have to check if there is one in line from the tank. Does the rebuild kit come with good instructions and are there any good tips to had that are not in the instructions?
