Just for grins and giggles, I installed the standard tune (for towing over 4K). There is a definite power gain! My followup question would be: I'm going to be towing a 29' trailer, Since I haven't added gauges (yet!), is it safe to tow using standard mode? I'm guesstimating about a 7000 lb total weight towing and ATV in the bed.

I do plan on doing the DP tune, but until then I am guessing the 1700 is better than stock for now.

tow safe would be the better option. Take it easy though. I had the superchips tuner for two years and it never pushed the limits per my gauges.

I didn't have gauges when I ran my superchip. The tow safe tune will not get high EGTs. I towed with the superchip one time after I put my gauges in and it never got hot.

If it is a handheld X3 model, then keep it and have Jody @ DP tuner upload 3 of your favorite tunes to it. That will save you from buying a switch chip, you just have to buy the tunes. That and the X3 has some basic data logging capabilities and code reading. A few pretty neat little things, and it's what I use. Not sure what kind of tuner it is you have though.

I have the Superchips 1700 tuner for the 7.3 PSD. It has 2 modes, standard and off-road. It came with the truck when I bought it.

Does it look the one here:
http://www.sctflash.com/X3.php

If not, then I don't think you can add someone else's custom tune to the one you have.

I have an 01' F250 4x4 and I run a superchip along with 4" exhaust and an aem intake and i have never had a problem pulling a 24' gooseneck with a 7000k load, my only complaint is its shifts. other friends of mine running bullydog or edge have no complaints just competetiveness, and what is the DP again? i have never heard of this before...

DP = DP Tuner. Its the only tuning I've ever run and I'm super pleased with it... really woke my truck up. Unlike the Bully Dog, Superchips, etc. DP Tuners (and others like Swamps, Total Diesel Performance, Powerhungry Performance, BTS etc.) are customed burned for each truck. You get the tunes you want, you can have them customized if you wish, and they also control shift parameters. And if you want, you can get live tuned to tweak the tunes for your truck, your mods, and your driving style.

i ran the hypertech for years and was happy until i found this site and installed the dp tuner(thanks clay and everyone else for the great advise) if it is free i would run it, get gauges, exhuast, intake. by then you will want more power dp tuner. i didnt know any better and sometimes ignorance is bless and knowledge is expensive.

Like Rick, ran my 1705 for a couple years before FTE and it did the job I asked for it at the time, needed firmer and faster shifts for towing, stock was laggy and was burnin fuel like crazy from the in and out of gears. Use that for now and save your money for the real deals mentioned above, you won't be dissapointed.

My truck too came with the 1700 Superchip installed. I am running the tow mode and pull a 10,000 GVW hay trailer, and pickup camper and horse trailer at other times. My truck pulls just like a diesel locomotive. No matter the grade! If I was starting from scratch I'd probably go with a custom tuner, but that said with the SuperChip, six speed and 4.88 gears she is a pulling locomotive!

I don't know about 7.3's with the auto but with the 6 spd. I can push EGT limits depending the grade, the load and the gear! That's in the tow mode. I haven't even tried the performance mode! Weather or not you use the SuperChip or go custom....GET GAUGES FIRST! Or you may be sorry! My .02. cents.

I should have taken you for a DP Tuner spin... you'd be chucking that Superchips into the Gorge!

The only truck that can run my chip is a truck that has the same PCM code and mods just like I have.

I understand really. From what I read the dp is way better tuner but for along time the superchips was the best thing we had. key word HAD
