starting problems

Hello everyone,

I was given a 76 f150 that has been sitting for about 4 years and am now trying to get it running. I changed the oil and replaced the fuel pump today so I am getting fuel to the carb now

but it is very hard to get it to turn over and when it does it dies when you try to get it to idle. I have never had a truck or a carb for that. Anyone know or have any suggestions?

Please be more specific about it being hard to turn over. Does it crank properly, but won't start? Or does it crank very slowly? Or does it not crank at all sometimes?

If you had to replace the fuel pump in all likelyhood the carb will need to be rebuilt.

O yes I am sorry it cranks great, but that is all till the battery dies.

I have a rebuild kit so I will hit that next. Thanks!

Three things are required to make an engine run:

Fuel, spark, and air.

Since the carburetor rebuild is in the process, test the flow after rebuilding. This will tell you how much the carburetor will squirt gas. If it's a healthy squirt, you've got sufficient fuel.

Spark: Find out if the coil is getting power. Also test the ignition module and the pickup in the distributor.

Air: Well, this one is obvious...

Thanks I was thinking about the plugs at the very least. It might be a while, but I will let you know how it turns out...

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I got the carburetor rebuilt and it purs like a kitten!! I also checked out the distibuter cap and it looks almost new. I think someone tried to get it running and gave up on it. Well thanks guys for the help, you will be hearing from a lot I think!!
