black smoke coming from exhaust while accelerating

The only time I have noticed any smoke was 40mph or greater going up hill and shifting. Get a "puff" for about 3 or 4 seconds and then it goes away. Does this indicate a problem? I know my other diesel (brand X) will smoke a little if I stand on it to get to Hwy speeds but thats it. It does not have the EGR system though.

hey so now i have had my EGR cooler replaced and it worked fine for a little while, still puffed some black because im sure that my EGR valve was still not working correctly but I wasnt too concerned because it seemed to be working fine without a loss of power. Just recently however I started my truck and another big plume of white smoke came out the the exhaust pipe, it was really thick and smelt like burnt coolant, I took my truck into the local ford dealership and got them to do a test and once again my EGR cooler has gone. It has been 4000 km since I had the last one replaced and I'm already tired of this happening. Is there any underlying causes that would make this happen repeatedly? I don't want to do this anymore and if its going to do it again I'm just going to get rid of the truck, im tired of this happening already. Luckily it was under warranty from the dealership

The engine oil cooler is stopped up and should have been replaced with the EGR cooler. It's the most common cause of the EGR cooler failing IMHO. Have them check the difference between the engine oil temperature and the engine coolant temperature. If it's more than 20* it NEEDS to be changed. Then go to dieselsite.com and get yourself a coolant filter kit and install it. You'll be amazed at the crap that comes out of your coolant system--mostly casting sand--and what kind of grief it can cause you.
