I've always wondered: Does Brian do the machining himself on a lathe, or does he have a machine shop do it for him?
Stewart
he has a shop do it for him. then they get heat treated and then cryo'ed for extra strength. you just simply wont believe what he is capable of until you get one.
i took the wifey out to get some movies at blockbuster and wash the rig from the 1000 mile round trip earlier and i made her drive. the woman who doesnt notice anything was severely impressed with how the truck drives now. my wife is so oblivious that 4 days after i bought her the new fusion she ran over one of the 2 rocks (kinda big-i cant lift them by myself big) at the end of our driveway and they have been sitting there for 7 years. thats how nice and smooth it is. it really feels like you just got done with some power mods.......

I'm sure the differences are slight, Fuji apples compared to Gala apples, but I'm happy with my John Wood built monster.
In order to have a really well built 4R100 ya have to custom machine some stuff, I was just wondering if Brian did it himself or if he had an outside source.

JW or Brian, you just CANNOT go wrong.

Brian IIRC told me he has an outside source do the machine work.
However, what I like better about my BTS is that he makes 1 tranny-heavey duty. Its not like john woods where you have to pay a little more here and a little more there to get it more built. At BTS you get one tranny that is good for 750-800HP.
John Wood will build you that 750 - 800 HP tranny too, (He still has the record HP truck using his tranny) for the same price I believe the Brian does. But he also offers the Towmaster, good to 400hp no problem for like 3200 bones. So it is nice to have that option IMO. Either way, I believe it is all geographic, If you live on one side of the continent or the other basically decides who you get the best damn trannys in the business from.

Not bashing on JW, just my opinion.
There are certain parts that will add cost to a tranny build, there aint no two ways about it.
John will use a hardened intermediate shaft and output shaft if your needs call for it, but those two parts are freaking incredibly expensive and add at least $1,500 dollars (IIRC) to the build he told me. Not even Brian can build a trans with those components and sell his tranny for $4,100 bucks.
John will be THE FIRST guy to say his transmission can fail. The transmissions are just a compilation of mechanical parts after all, and EVERYTHING mechanical fails eventually. It's John and Brian's attention to their build detail, and after-sale customer service for their builds that sets them apart from the rest.
And just a side note, John does all his own custom machining on the precision lathe in his shop. I've seen him use it for a quick hit on a part just to clean the part up because he didn't like how it felt to the touch.
I didn't dig into the machining too much. I do know that he has a patent on the pump and he has a guy in PA do the machining for him. He said the pump and machine work is $470 alone. Ford has been trying to buy his patent from him appartently.
Mine is being built 13 Oct, should be in Washington by the 17th or so. probably installing it sometime around the 26th is my guess. cant wait, but have to get back to the states first!

Yea, but thats why my build is Oct 13th, because right now i am deployed in Afghanistan, so there is no hurry for it to be there. But it will be waiting for me by the time i get home. got a buddy who absolutely loves his!
