F-150 Limited Towing Capacity

F-150 Limited Towing Capacity
I have a 2008 F-150 Limited with a towing package. The dealer quoted a tow rating of 9300 lbs., but the Owner's Manual states that the Limited package can only tow 5100 lbs. I have received conflicting information since discivering this issue. One dealer says because of the 22" whhels/tires the tow rating is lower, but in practice there is no problem towing a heavier weight. Another dealer says that the limit is 5100 lbs. Another says that the rating is 9300 lbs. because of the tow package. Has anyone towed with a Limited with 22' wheels and the tow package? How much weight and what is your experience?

Go look in the drivers door jamb and write down your cgwr
Then go have your vehicle weighed....with a full tank of gas and you in it....
Subtract your vehicle from the cgwr and you've got your tow rating...(other people or things in your bed also need to be subtracted from this to figure your tow rating...)
For example...if your truck is truly a 5100 lb tow rating and you've got 4 guys in the cab...your tow rating is now down to 4100.....
what comes down to it (and if you don't believe me, call your state highway patrol office)....is you can't under any circumstances go over your cgwr

According the 2008 sales brochure published by Ford the GCWR of your truck is 11000 lbs which would make your maximum towing weight to be 5100lbs. That's for the Limited Package and Harley Davidson Package only. Those are the only models that come with AWD and they have lighter springs and those 22" wheels. My best guess is that the wheels are the most limiting factor. The engine and transmission are the same. It possibly could cause some problems for the AWD system. I definately wouldn't want to tow much with those 22" wheels. They are not made for towing.

Tow Rating
Tires & wheels do have something to do with towing capability. There may be other factors that I don't know, but you have to be carefull not to exceed the tire weight rating.
Remember to get the maximum weight rating from your tires, you have to inflate your tires to their maximum listed on the side of your tires. The lower your pressure the lower your capacity.

The Owner Guide says that if it is a 4 X 2 version the tow capacity is 5300 lbs. If it is a 4 x 4 version the tow capacity is 5100 lbs. The GCWR for both version is 11000 lbs. The tow capacity ratings are calculated using more than just the tire/wheel size. It depends on the transmission, axles, springs, as well as the tire load ratings. Larger wheels do reduce the tow rating because they reduce your effective gear ratio due to the larger diameter.

larger wheels don't affect your gear ratio...the overall diameter of the 18 and 20 inch options on f-150's are the exact same (275/65/18 and 275/55/20) are both 31.9 inch diameter....and the 22 inch wheels on limiteds and HD's came with 275/45/22 tires which have a 31.8 inch diameter...
The reason larger wheels reduce tow rating is two part....one the wheels weigh more and reduce the weight of the trailer...and the second part is the tires in the larger wheel diameter sizes have a lower rating because of the shorter sidewall....
