WOW! Lots of great info here. We foster puppies and kittens for the local SPCA and sometimes get a litter in that is infected. The SPCA does frontline but some live. Hot water kills them on contact in most cases. If you steam clean your carpets and furniture your sure to kill them all. Also, follow-up with sprays and what ever else you feel comfortable using and you can get rid of them.
I fill the bath tub full of water and throw in 4 quarters. I tell her if she can pick them out with her teeth she can have them. I haven't lost a quarter yet, but I have lost several mother-in-laws!!
I don't think Frontline is very good. It's a cheap consumer level product.
Advantage is better. Get it from your vet, or online. This is the little tube that you put on Fido's head and back.
Program is essential. It's a once a month pill. We use it on every animal, every month, except during a few winter months. Again, from your vet or online.
Most people quit treating when they are not seeing fleas any more. Bad idea. You've still got fleas, and they will come back. It might take a good 6 months to completely rid your property of fleas, even though you are not seeing them nor getting bit.
Foggers are good. Use them every 2 weeks for a couple of months. Fleas can live in carpets, curtains, and cracks in your flooring for many months.
Don't forget the yard. Spray your entire yard with a Malathion product every month for at least 6 months. The now illegal Diazinon was better, and had the added benefit of killing ants, but Malathion is about as good as we can get now. Spray your entire yard, and about 3 feet up the walls and doors of your home. Include concrete walks and drives, because the fleas live in cracks.
Once I learned to stick with it for the long term, I can say we have been flea free for over 10 years. The only thing we do now is the Program pills to keep the fleas from breeding if we happen to bring some home on dog or clothing.
Take a pie pan and put it under each desk lamp and put some rubbing alcohol in it, enough for say a 1/4" deep. At night when you're ready to go to bed, turn off all the lights, and turn on the desk lamps.
Okay, does anybody else think that using desklamps around open containers of alcohol, while you sleep, is a bad idea?
Talstar One works very well. It will kill the fleas and the larvae. It mutates them so they can not reproduce. It mixes in a sprayer with water. I treat my yard and entire house once a year.

I have always done both with no problems. I spray the yard one day and keep the dogs in the house, then do the house and keep the dogs outside for a day. I bathe the dogs when I have them outside also.
I spray all of the floors, the undersides of the furniture, and under the cushions.I spray from the top and work down to the floor. There is no strong odor and really works well.
My dad's dog pen was infested. He moved the dogs and burned the yard. The fleas came back. I gave him the talstar and he said it took care of everything.
It costs about seventy dollars but one bottle will last a few years. It also works for roaches, termites, and spiders.
yes, just like hoosier said, after you do that, then you need to get frontline, or some sort of drops. make sure the drops cover all stages of the flea life (eggs, larvae, adult). What i do for my animals, is not just put all of it in one spot on their back of the neck, the cats will just lick it all off. i put one drop here, then there, then under armpits, then under tummy, above tail....
that'll take care of them for a few months (probably all summer). fleas are out in lawns and such, so they're easy for the cats to catch again, the drops are the best way for infestations to not reoccur.
