With summer getting close our house is getting lots of ants. My parents are calling them "****" ants I dont know the actual term for them but there really small. WE have them in our kitchen and in my bedroom. There is no food laying around on the ground, the house is kept pretty clean...Anyone recommend any way to get rid of these damn things? it makes me feel like our house is dirty and trashy having them around.
We have gotten them over the years in our house in Las Vegas. The term "**** ants" is one from a generation past me. My Dad called them so.
Three years ago my wife and I went away from our house in Las Vegas for eight days. Upon returning we had "****" ants all over out garage, and kitchen. They were all over the counters, and all over the inside of the base cabinets. In the cereal, you name it. It was gross. I took out all the drawers, and took everything out of the cabinets. (not a quick chore)
I sprayed every thing down with ant spray. Then the next day I spent the whole day washing ant spray off everything. Next day, I put everything back in its place. The next thing I did was call a bug exterminator. I explained our problem and viola, for 20 bucks a month, we have 0 spiders, 0 roaches, and 0 ants. Worth every penny IMHO.
We where just going to have a problem with them and kept finding and killing the scout ants when I was outside one day and noticed 1000s and 1000s of them in a dog house where we feed two outside cats.
I went and got some multi bug killer that I had and put it in a little spray bottle and started to go to town killing them when I started to go around the foundation of my home I found a trail of those little suckers that split into a Y one line marching in to my crawl space and the other went to the dog house.
I started to lay down a steady stream of fire at this point killing everything in my way(spiders, beetles) until I saw nothing moving as I finished I wiped the sweat from my forhead and lit a cigarette and looked around at the death and destruction I had caused and threw the little spray bottle down to the ground and swore never to pick up a little spray bottle again
Next time I will use a 2gal pump sprayer instead it worked for me no more ants

Bug spray is great for outside, if I have them somewhere I don't want to spray it, like the kitchen, I put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and use that. Not only does it kill the ants, it sanitizes the surface and wipes out the scent 'trail' for the following ants. My hubby pours gas on them outside and it works (no, he doesn't light it), but I have to say don't try that at home !
I think the point is that you want to kill them all, not just the ones you see.
That's why you bait them and they bring it back home and feed it to the colony.
It may take a few days but it is a better solution in the long term. IMHO.
They can be a real pain. I'm trying to remember what the bait stations were that I found a couple years ago that worked really really well.
They were clear plastic with a bit of tan colored food paste inside. I really liked them because the dogs and cats couldn't get into them.
You plop one where the ants come in, they carry bits of food back to the nest with them, and kill the whole nest over a couple of days. Bug spray is much more instant, but this worked long term and in less than a week, plenty fast for me.
I imagine any take it back to the nest style bug house will work just as well.
The very toxic diazinon crystals work really well.
Also, I'm told that the skin so soft spray from Avon works really well if you spray it around your foundation. Maybe the oil base one would last longer. I'm going to give it a try this year when they start invading my place.
Terro is boric acid and sugar... Boric acid is poisonous to them, so they pick it up, bring it back for the queen to eat, and they all die - nest done, everything. Might take a day or two - in the meantime you will be VERY tempted to use the chemical-insecticide solution

I was also told that Skin So Soft from Avon was 'suppose' to be good against mosquitoes.
Went fly fishing during the Hexegenia hatch up north.
Usually, I'd be happy coming home with just 100 mosquito bites.
I lost count at 250+ bites.
Worked extremely well.........................for the mosquitoes.
What no one is going to comment on my suggestion... They are sugar ants, so dipped in chocolate seems like the obvious solution
Have you tried WD40 around the foundation of your house. Its a solvent/oil base it'll do 2 things, break their path by cleaning the scent they leave, and it'll leave a noxious residue that they'll not want to cross..
