I am having trouble installing an 18 WX ST II cb radio. I was wondering where to connect the red lead wire of the radio of the DC power cord to an accessory 12 volt fuse so that I can turn the radio on only when the ignition is turned on.
Just check your fuse box for any accessory's that run only when your key is on accessory or when the engine is started.. and the Red to the positive side and black is ground..Make sure to match you antenna in with an SWR bridge Meter... you want to stay as close to 1.1 to 1 match accross all 40 channels... If your maych is high on the upper channels you'll want to shorten the antenna in about 1/32nd of an inch at a time..and check your lower channels at the same time to insure they dont start going up at that time...when they do you'll want to find a happy medium where both the upper channels are happy and the lower ones are also... A good acceptable match accross the band would be 1.5 to 1...
They make fuse taps at the store. Pick the fuse you want to use, pull it and the fuse tap wraps around it, and after it's plugged back in, it gives you a spot to plug a slide on connector.
IIRC, using an existing circuit can put lots of noise into the radio. Instead, run fused power and ground wires directly from the battery and twist them together all the way to the radio.
Too get full power out of the CB/ham Radio run it directly to the Batt..and if you have noise in the receiver run a Noise filter on the + line of the radio.. that will knock out any line noise...
if mounting under the dash, where is the best spot to take this through the firewall? What kind of cable do you suggest? I already have plenty of 12 and 16awg stranded shielded wire. i am figuring the 12 is better...
Places in the firewall vary from year to year. Usually the easiest is around the steering column area through a rubber seal. If you make your own hole in the metal, I would get a short piece of vacuum line and run the wire through the vacuum hose and install the vacuum hose in the firewall hole to give extra protection for the wire.
