every single time i try to start my truck it fires up first time, but chugs and idles bad then dies then it is about 7 minutes or so again of cranking and waiting before it starts. its making me mad because i try to keep it from dieing but it still dies.
Probably air intrusion. That and burned out glow plugs are probably the two most common problems with these trucks. Most likely an injector return line kit (about $35) will solve the problem.
Be careful not to crank the starter more then 20 seconds and then wait for 2 minutes before trying again. If you force it, you'll be looking at replacing an overheated starter -- expen$ive...
Don't feel bad that you aren't able to keep it from dying -- no fuel to the injector pump means it aint gonna run!
What year is your truck? Does it have the fuel filter mounted next to the alternator? If so, you can probably speed up getting it started again by pressing the schrader valve on the filter head while cranking until fuel comes out.
Air leaking into the return line system lets the fuel filter drain back to the tank.
If you want to check for this, remove the fuel filter before you try to start the engine.
If the filter is not full of fuel, you know you have air intrusion.
Fill the filter, and it should start without stalling.
my opinion, others may not agree. If you have an air intrusion problem an electric lift pump is the quickest way to fix it. There are so many places these old diesels can leak air.
When I bought my old truck it had an electric pump with an off and on switch. I turned it off and the truck ran badly. I replaced the pump and it still ran badly. I removed the mechanical pump all together and the truck ran fine. When I installed the turbo, i had return lines replaced. It actually made no difference because the electric pump made sure I had fuel. You can get air leaks without getting fuel leaks.
I had the same problem with my 86 E350..but my air leak was from the return line from the injectors the line would leak down while sitting and be a bear to start..bio diesel seems to eat the seals faster..when it gets real bad the fuel will run down the back of the motor..the kit from ford is about 60$ an comes with o rings and return lines and caps replace ALL the injector o-rings the first time !!
