Camper Shell 3rd Brake Light hook-up? / VA Lifting Laws
Hi, I just got a free camper shell yesturday from a friend's dad. He sold the truck it came with a year ago and had no use for it. score . Anyways, it has a 3rd brake light and I was wondering how I should hook it up? I was thinking if I hook it up to the tail lights, the it would blink and make that flash with the turn signals, and hooking both sides would make them stay on when one side should be blinking right? So is there a place in the cab where i can hook up the light? Thanks.
And also, I was wondering if anyone knew if its legal to install two lift blocks on the back axle? I don't think a six inch will match the same as the front now.... And it looks dumb now. Thanks again

Stacking lift blocks is a bad idea!
If you tap into one of the brake lights to make the third brake light work, then when that turn signal is on the 3rd brake light will flash. Your are right. So, You should be able to hook it to both and have it stay on when either side is flashing. That should be fine.

They make a converter for that exact purpose, they can be had at a trailer/towing shop.
It takes feed from both the tailight wires and produces a single wire for the third light (or trailer lights).
They come in universal that gets spliced in or vehicle specific that that plugs in.
-Enjoy

Technically if you read the law, no suspension modifications are allowed in Va. But, the general rule I have found that most cops and inspection stations follow are; blocks are allowed in the rear, but not in the front. The 4x4 trucks actually had a block from the factory in the back, and you will find most trucks with lift kits have the lift kit block installed on top of the factory block with longer u-bolts.

You could take a feed from each brake light and run it through a diode. The diode will prevent/block back feeding to other bulbs. The stripe on the diode goes toward the new 3rd brake light.

Wire from left turn and brake lamp, through First diode -->, to 3rd brakelamp.
Wire from Right turn and brake lamp, through Second diode -->, to 3rd brakelamp.
Splice the two taillamp wires together at the 3rd brakelamp, after the diodes.
BTW, this would also work for retrofitting and replacing a 1980-1992 Cargo lamp, with a 1993/1996/7 combination third brake and cargo lamp assymbly.
