pulling a 40ft gooseneck trailer

i just bought a 40ft trailer that i will be picking this week from san antonio and i was wondering if the gears on my truck will be enough to pull this trailer all loaded up. it is a 14k trailer and the gears on my truck are 3.55's. the truck is a 96 f250 cc 4x4 short bed. how do ya'll think tis setup will work?

The 3.55 gears won't like it but they should be able to pull it. If you have a automatic, it probably won't like it much either.

Should handle it all right unloaded. But loaded could be a different story.. Tell me more about the trailer? Will you be pulling loads with this or is this to sell?

it is an automatic. the trailer i haven't got yet, i will be using it to haul cars from austin to the tip of south texas. it is about a 6 hour trip one way, and the trailer will only loaded one way.

It will pull OK but your trans will likely overheat if you are running the stock cooler.
That trailer (loaded) should be pulled with a dually. If not, Stopping & turning while loaded will be marginal at best....might even be illegal in some states. Way over the GVWR of your rig. My 2 cents.

i thought that a dually wasn't nececary since a lot of people pull rv trailers and equipment trailers that big or maybe bigger with single rear wheel trucks. i live in texas and will do most of the hauling here so i will have to check into it to make sure.

if the trailer only weighs 14k loaded, you are fine! i pulled a huge 53 foot wedgebed car hauler unloaded with my truck no prob. it was quite heavy empty. however, the 3.55s are not what you need especially with that auto. mines auto, but 4.10's. i have pulled some huge loads long distances no problem. i have grossed 35,000+ and no problem with it.

i was looking thru the the owners guide and noticed it doesnt have any gvwr info for the 7.3 powered trucks. does anyone know the capasity of a truck like mine to legally and safely tow a trailer like this? i have been searching for info on this and really havent had any luck. would a cdl be recomeded for this since the gvwr of the trailer is 14k? i appreciate the help guys cause i have been looking without much success.

Maximum trailer weight for '96 F-250, Power Stroke, 4x4, auto, 3:55 is 9500#.

In ohio a CDL is required if the trailer GVW meets or exceeds 16k AND the combined GVW for truck and trailer meets or exceeds 26,001#.
So a Dually rated at 10,000# GVW pulling a 16,000# GVW trailer, technically needs a CDL.

I would strongly suggest a BIG tranny cooler and changing to 4:10 gears. That would be cheaper than a new truck.

Your truck may be capable of towing it but you may be illegal..... Check with your states' DOT. I've pulled a 4 car trailer, gooseneck loaded with my F350 single wheel CC. I gotta say stopping it was exciting at times.

When I bought my 5th wheel rv it is 15K. First thing I thought was, great, I have to buy a one ton dually. Then I heard about the firestone air bags, I can't say enough good things about them. The rear sits right up there, handles my 5er fine. About a month ago I pulled from NE to AZ a 42' enclosed car hauler loaded at 22K, 7K over weight. Except for a few flat tires I did fine with my mods and 4.10's. I also wondered about cdl but just flew by the weight stations. I agree with the above, put a true cooler on for the trans. If on a pull of any kind don't leave it in OT. I'm sure you have read on here all the mods you should do to pull heavy, like the EGT gauge in #1.

my trailer stops well, of course it is tandem daully, so 8 tires dragging makes a big difference. however, i did blow a fuse once while hauling a 11,000+ pound tractor on a 7500# trailer. that was a fun stop, but i was prepared because i saw my green connection light go out on the box.
