The family is going on a long trip later this year and we'll be driving through the night while the kids sleep. My wife's minivan has a dash mount switch that selects between int lights on, on with door open, and off. I'd like to do the same thing with my X for things like fuel stops, etc when one of the adults has to hop out but not blast the kids with bright int lights. I'd also rather not do so with pulling fuses. Any ideas?
Id like to hear from the gurus as well. I just got back from a long trip through the night with a sick 1yr old and pee breaks woke her up everytime. Free bump
Didn't read a definitive answer on either this thread or the link one, Monsta. But will this work on a 2005 Ex?? I would love to make this mod work correctly. The ability to turn off all dome lights at will would be great.
I think for the earlier years, 2000, 01 you will find the fix for the lights in the fuse compartment like in the thread. I have an 02, and found the wires behind the passenger kick panel. I would presume the 05 would be the same.
I added a small switch up in between the switches for the venting rear glass.

Thanks. Do you remember the color of the wire behind the passenger side kick panel? And why is such a wire behind a kick panel?
The wire you want, or wires are black with blue tracer. I say wire or wires because some get the running board lights at the same time, and splice into both together. Mine are corroded and have not worked in some time, which is fine with me anyhow, so I spliced into one only. Which one of the two, I couldn't tell ya. I found out the hard way and did both and blew a fuse, that is how I singled it out and figured that my running board lights are shot.
Why all the wires in the passenger side? Well, they run all the bundles for the back of the X down the passenger side. In fact if you ever have pulled off the passenger side bottom pc, which you have to pull anyhow, you will see a few bundles of wires and the rear washer fluid hose. The wires are just easier to access behind the inside kick panel. Just pull off some tape from them until you find the ones ya want.
I pulled the header panel rite out and then drilled and mounted switch, ran all the wires under interior liner, down the pillar to the splices. Left enough wires to be able to pull down that middle panel to access things later on as well.
Ford did miss the boat on this...It's a safety thing too...much easier to see into a lit vehicle if someone has bad intents. Also, much harder to see out if your interior is on.
If I just hopped in,say in a supermarket parking lot, I want to be able to idle in park till I'm ready to go, with the interiors off at night.
First, thanks again to everyone who takes the time to upload
write-ups and pictures of their mods to help others DIY!
My lie-o-meter decided to stop working this week.
Since I had to remove the overhead console to fix the lie-o-meter,
it's the perfect time to install my interior light kill switch too.
I posted some pictures in an album showing the '05 pass kick panel
connectors and the lie-o-meter with the offending resister hanging...
By the way, the lie-o-meter had #8 Torx screws to remove it from
the inside of the overhead console. In the '05 there is a screw in
the sunglass compartment. Once you remove that screw you can
pop the rear loose and then pop the front down.
It was a piece of cake.
I was able to find the black/blue wire that controls the interior lights
but even with all the connectors separated the running board lights
still come on when a door is opened (yes they do time out eventually,
but the whole point was to stop all the lights!) I will do more investigating in daylight tomorrow.
