have a 1 ton 1999 diesel van, brake light came on and have squeal coming from pullie looks to be vacum pump.i followed a hose that goses to plastic manfold and coming out of that manifolld a hose goses to brake booster could it be that the vacum pump aint working causing my brakes to not work?help
Diesels typically have a hydroboost system that works off the power steering pump, not a vaccum boost system like gas vehicles. Vans may be different, I don't know. What pully is making the noise? I didn't think that the 99 and up diesels had a belt operated vaccum pump. I thought they were battery powered. Like I said, I'm used to trucks, not vans.
Hey Adam, welcom to FTE!! That is your power steering pump- it not only powers your umm, steering LOL, but it provides the pressure you need for power brakes. Diesel engines don't make a vacuum like a gas engine, so an alternative means to power your braking system is used. Check your PS fluid level, it's probably low. Also look to see what cause it to be low in the first place. Good luck and keep us informed, and don't be a stranger- hang out long enough you'll know more than the Ford mechs and be selling your house to buy mods !!
Danny, my 97 has a belt driven vacuum pump but it only works the accessories in the cab, has nothing to do with the brakes. Both my 97 and 02 have the hydro-boost systems for the brakes. You're right that the hydro-boost uses the power steering pump for power.
