I was greasing the front u-joints this morning on my 06 SD and noticed rubber seal like things that apparently go on the ends of the front axle tube flopping around. What are these for and how hard would it be to replace them. I assume they are seals of some kind.
Are you talking about the dust seal that is attached to the axle and rides at the entrance to the axle tube?
I don't know how the '06 models are set up but replacing them on '04 and earlier is a little bit involved. Actually replacing the seal is easy. Getting to them is the involved part. You have to remove the brakes, the hub, the bearing assy, and then the axle shaft (likely damaging the big axle seal in the process). Any of those steps can be a bear sometimes.
I misread your original post. I thought you were replacing your front u-joints, which led me to believe that you would not find it hard to replace the seals. You would have had most of the work done already.
heck, even the dealer told me not to get too excited about the dust seals. If you have the front end apart, they are cheap and easy to change, but I would never tear down the front to change just the dust seal. I think I only have 2 trucks that still have them intact. they are more cosmetic than anything, just try not to lose any sleep over it.
