Exhaust Recommendations

Im fixin to take my truck and get some exhaust on it , and im gonna run it all the way out the back. What do yall recomend for a muffler ? Or should i run straight pipes? I dont want it real loud , but i wanna be able to hear it good. I have headers on it...... I hear alot of people run Hooker Aerochambers with headers. Give me yer input.

Thanks Dustin

well i've got a 302 with true dual glasspacks. sounds mean. but before i suggest a muffler, what size engine do you have? and what size pipes are you planning on running

i would go with Flowmaster 40's if you want that deep loud rumble or 50's if you don't want it too loud. i know the 40's are loud, my dad has has a 360 running 2.5 inch pipes with the 40's and its got a great deep rumble to it. but probably your best bet would be to go with Flowmaster

do i need the standard , super , or delta ?

i thank i need the standard.... it says

This is the most “aggressive” sounding street/strip muffler that Flowmaster offers. If you're looking for attention, this one will get you noticed. The standard 40 series has an “aggressive rumble" and will generally resonate inside the vehicle around 1800-2000 rpm’s, and again at 2400-2600 rpm’s. Constructed of 16 gauge aluminized steel and fully mig-welded for maximum durability

i would go with standard if you want that really good low rumble. (if you go with 40's and you get standard, they are also called american thunder series) if you didn't know. good luck with you trucks, keep em running, and show that Ford pride.

thats a vid of my 400 with 2 1/4" pipe, glasspacks, no cats, true duels. I love it, has a nice rumble to it now that the glasspacks are worn a little.

hmm... i've got a pair of Flowmaster 40's, oriented as seen below:

They dump off before the axle, and they are i believe 2.5" straight pipes off of the Hooker Comp headers. i figure some of my input my be helpful. For reference my engine is a mostly stock, non-original 360 or 390 (still havent checked, i'm lazy, although i'm pretty sure it's a 360!)

At idle, the truck is very quiet, it does have a nice grumble to it tho.

It's BEST sound is from 2500- 3k or so rpms accelerating kinda hard (can't go above 3k, so i don't know what it sounds like above that, MSD ignition kills at 3k until i buy a 4.5k chip).

While driving down the road, with a slight load to the engine, the exhaust sounds like someone tapping on something tinny that echos or i've even thought it sounded like frogs peeping in a far away marsh land. This is while in the cab driving.

Overall, i'm satisfied with them. I've been told that if i ran the pipes all the way out the back of the truck, they would be hella loud. I don't know if that's true, but the extra pipe would allow the sound to reverberate better, so i guess it's possible.

I do wish they were just a little louder though, however their milder tones are rewarding early in the morning or late at night.

Where i live, in a subdivision maybe 150 yards off the main road, mixed in through houses and many trees to "cushion" the main street noise, I can hear my truck take off from my house when it is turning on the main road. I can't hear any other traffic from my house, for reference.

Any other q's let me know!!

JT

I had a 1971 w/ a 410 FE with headers. I originally ran 3" into 40 series delta flows, but the 3" seemed to be a bit more that the 410 liked. I had my exhaust guy put 2.5" tail pipes on and it ran and sounded awesome. Very deep and very loud. Maybe a bit too loud for most but still a great sound.

Dynomax bullet style race only mufflers. It is a type of glasspack, but it's the best glasspack I have ever heard. I plan to put two on my truck.

I vote dynomax ultra flos. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-17221/ Dual 2.5" would probably be a better size unless the engine is highly modified.

I have had Dynomax 2.5" straight tubes and they were pretty loud and aggresive.

Then I switched to Flowmaster 40s and they are lower in frequency and drone like hell.

Now I have Summit Turbos and they sound great. Mean tone at idle that quiets down going down the road and really wake up when you step on the throttle.
