A/C Compressor Problem/Noise

A/C Compressor Problem/Noise
My A/C compressor makes a clattering noise when engaged but cools a little when on....could use a charge ....it sat for over a year. Do i need a new compressor...can it be rebuilt? Thanks for any help.

Well, when I take the belt off the pully turns fine till you engage the clutch then it has a catch about once every turn. But it seem to be locked up until I took the belt off and turned it by hand to loosen it up. I'm hoping that since it sat for a while it just needs a good charge and with fresh oil.
