ford had hard shifting problems on early e40 transmisions, does anybody know what they did to this to resolve this , it feels like a firm shift kit sometimes it shift normal sometimes it bangs hard, i already have a shift kit on it and would like to just keep the shift kit but not the harsh shifting.
thank you
Don't know if this is the same problem etc. I have a 94 F250 with E4OD. The tranny shop that did the work for me said the early(assume including mine) had problems with torque shudder, the tranny would have a very subtle vibration under acceleration. Basically the torque converter clutch going bad, overheating things and contaminating the ATF. The contaminated ATF then caused intermittent harsh shifting. The only fix was a rebuild with the new spec TC which was designed specifically to solve the problem with the earlier TC. My rebuild cost around $2,500 in 97, and I believe much of the problem was due to me forgetting to check the fluid before a tow in hilly country, duh.
I also have the problem. 1990 F150 4X4
Got a new AAMCO tranny a couple of summers ago and it does the same thing before and after.
Shifts nice and firm but when it hits 4th gear and sometimes 3rd, If you don't have your foot on the throttle enough then
(%SLAM%)! It sounds like the damn undercariage is coming out.
I think some of the trouble is play in the drive train because of age but still want to do something about it.
Let me know what you find out
