I have some extra parts I'd like to try to sell on Ebay. For example a 79 F 150 grill assembly and a couple of tail gates. How might sombody submit an aluminum grill for shipment? How would you expect a grill to be packaged if you wanted it shipped to you?
Don't bother with the tail gate, the S&H wil be more then it is worth probably. Sell those locally. The grill you can sell if it is worth more then $50, otherwise sell that locally too. You can buy a box for the grill for about $12 at a UPS store.
The grill I would expect to be well packed, the tailgate if you sold it I would expect to be packed with cardboard and newspaper and not popcorn and bubble wrap.
I would use the USPS and not UPS for the grill. I would use UPS for the tailgates.
I've bought both and had them shipped but for the life of me I can't remember how they were packaged. I want to say the tailgate was just more or less wrapped in cardboard, you can't really hurt them unless it is NOS.
FYI...be aware that Ebay is now charging an ~11% final value fee on everything you sell.
Awhile back I listed a big stainless magnaflow (which did not sell) for $80 and they told me the final value fee would be $9.xx. And just recently I was gonna sale a spare pair of motorcycle gloves I have, put $35 for the buy it not price, and they told me the final value fee would be $4.35.
I can't raise the price on a used item enough to cover that. And as it is, they charge you 35 cents to list, whatever the final value fee is, and then 5-6% on incoming payments via paypal! I can't even cover that much with extra handling or freight charges without making it ridiculous. I'm not selling on ebay anymore.
$80 item plus $20 shipping: .35 to list, $9 final value fee, $6 fee on incoming payment. Total amount I have to pay them just to sell my item: $15.35. **** it!
Ebay was good until they got greedy. I haven't sold anything for over a month. When they said Paypal only instead of MO or checks, that made them richer on the transaction. They tried to play the "FREE SHIPPING" game with sellers, even that made them more money. I tried to include shipping in the listing so I wouldn't loose money but they made money on shipping too, instead of just the purchase price. As FORD_SIX said, sell them here.
Wrap the gates in cardboard and find a correct box with styrofoam peanuts for the grill.
Large items like tailgates, I ship truck freight. Although, I have the ability and available materials to build my own crates, with lots of bubble wrap. Lighter, more fragile items, lots of bubble wrap, peanuts, and insurance with the USPS. BTW, Craigslist is free to advertise items for sale. Do NOT ship anything until you have money-in-hand, and make that clear when you post it for sale. "Show me the money", and you get your parts. Talk is cheap. Rare parts are not.......'trust' is fine for some folks, but not me.
Visit your local body shops. They receive parts in shipping cartons and then discard the cartons. I'm certain that you would get a carton and padding for free. I know that at the shop I work out of would give you all you could use.
