I have a 15" Kicker CompVX that I would like to make a custom box myself to fit it in my single cab chevy 2500. My friend fit 2 15" L7s in his single cab dodge ram. So do you have any suggestions on how to do that, the dimensions i should make the box and make it where it doesnt sound terriballe ext ext? Thank you, any help appriceated!!
What is the mounting depth? The deepest I've managed to fit is around 4.5" in a box that is 7.5" bottom, 17" tall and 3.5" across the top, which gives a little over 17" on the face.
Here's what it says on the website: "8-1/4, 20.9" i'm assuming that is not going to work? so what if I made it large as possible, but not as big as they say? Would it just sound ****ty?
It says "8-1/4, 20.9", so i'm assuming that won't work. So what if I make it smaller, but large as possible for my truck and then put it in? Will it sound like ****?
You can adjust the length (side to side) to get the volume and bigger is always better than smaller, but you still want to be pretty close to the intended volume.
8 1/4" mounting depth is going to be a PITA. Design will make a little difference here, but consider you're going to use 3/4 mdf or like. If you surface mount the speaker, the depth of the box must be a minimum of 9" on the narrowest side of the magnet. To lay it out on paper, I get the diameter of the largest spot on the back of the speaker (usually the magnet I think), divide it by 2 and this is now dim for offcenter depth. If you know the angle and a little trig you can figure out the depth on the center of the speaker, that's a lot of work.
I'll see if I can make a google sketch up if you need it.
Just to give you an idea of what you need, here's a simple box. 13 7/8" hole for 15" speaker, 2cf interior volume.
I looked at the kicker website and it looks like there is a plastic cover over the back, once that is removed you can lose a little mounting depth, and find the dia of it so you can put it in a slanted box.
Here is a picture of the box with out the top on. Do you think that this will be enough air space for the kicker? I need 1.8 CU. FT. of air minimum, but I don't know how to measure that. The box is 39" Long, 18" Wide, and 11" Deep.
Those dims give an outside volume of 7722CI. Divided that by 1728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet and you have 4.46cf. However that's not the interior volume. I will assume 3/4 mdf, so subtract 1.5" off the exterior dims to get the interior dims. 37.5x16.5x9.5 for 5878ci or 3.4cf.
It fits behind the passenger seat and it lays across on the floor to my center console. We did what my friend did to his 02 Ram and yanked out the plastic and the carpet on the backside so it's just bare metal and it gives you quite a bit more room. It actually fits. My friend was also telling my about putting them in the tool box. Would that actually work? Or would it sound like ****? Like having two L7s back there..
Carpet is a decent sound dampener, when you pull it up your going to have a bit more road noise. You may want to coat that area heavily with undercoating.
Without a path for the sound to enter the cab, it's going to sound terrible with the speakers in the tool box and you in the cab. Plus, you need to do something to keep the aluminum from rattling. MDF has a pretty low resonance frequency, I suspect alm has a much higher freq.
