WTF !!! I have smoke and melted wires !!!

They are Called, Battery Cables, Starter Cables, Ground Cables. 4 Gauge is the most common, but 2 Gauge is better.
This above quote here has me concerned. Don't you mean Starter Solenoid to Starter Cable? This is a positive wire, not a negative ground wire.
Or are you talking about the Red/Blue wire that comes from the Ignition switch, that triggers the solenoid?
Or are you talking about the (Factory Color) Black/Yellow Fuse Link that goes to the ignition switch, or the black/Red fuse link that goes to the altenator?
Edit: None of these are ground wires.

Ok it was the ground off the battery that melted ......sorry
I replced the battery, starter and both the before mentioned wires - she was alive again! But, the alt light was. Flashing so I swaped the volt regulator - light went out but the dash light started to dim and come back , over and over - I guess it's time for an alternator

Make sure the mounting surface of the new regulator is clean, and makes good contact to clean metal. The regulator grounds through it's case.
Poor grounds at the regulator, battery, firewall, etc... can also cause flickering light syndrome, as well as a bad altenator.

thanks for the heads up on that ....
I know for sure that I the ground from the battery to the engine in not in the right spot . when I was taking apart the carnage the little lobe on the block that it should mount to with teh ground strap to the frame was not being used . mainly because the blot broke off in such a way at some point that it has to be drilled out or something , but I cant get enough room in there with a drill to work on it . both are currently attached between the timing pointer and the block .... prob not the best gronding place but both are very tight to the bock .Any better places to try and ground to if the proper spot is unusable?
I will take a bit of scotch bite pad to the fender under the VR for a certain clean point of contact.
but if both those are goound I am thinking I am off to the parts store , again haha

Not exactly sure of the location that you are speaking of, however, any spot that allows a solid connection of the cable and block is perfectly fine.
Also make sure there is also a cable that runs from the block to the firewall. And if you want to get really nuts run another cable from the block to the frame and then have a cable from the frame to the bed.
