Bigtime No Start

Hello all. I have a 1974 f-100 with a 360, C6 trans.
I drove my truck today to pick up my new lawn mower, picked it up and then stopped on the way home to get gas. Turn the key...click...no start, but smoke from engine compartment. Pop hood and see the negative battery cable smoking and that the positive cable had sort of blown up at the terminal. I replaced the cables and then noticed a crack in the solenoid and replaced that. Still just a click. A jump start did not help, and my light(only one seems to work ) comes on anyway. In cab fuses seem ok as well. Any advice on where to start? I have to say I know very little about electrical wiring, so be gentle. Starter maybe?
Thanks in advance.

Possibly. A starter on its way out draws more current and could cause exactly what you observed (happened on my 77 a couple of years ago).
