Hey folks, I have a question. I recently had to replace my pressure line from the PS pump to the steering gear and now I have a leak at the fitting where it goes in to the gear. It's leaking through the threads and I'm pretty sure I didn't cross thread it. Has anyone had this problem before? There's no washer or o-ring that goes in there? Is there? Maybe some teflon tape would do the trick. I wanted to see if this was a common issue. I looked at the factory manual and it recommended replacing the seat in the gear. That means a whole lot of work that I'd like to avoid.
You might want to check if there is supposed to be a small plastic washer/gasket for
tat one. If that fitting is supposed to pivot, you will have that white plastic or teflon
washer. Those cannot be over tightened or else they will leak.
You can try Teflon tape won,t hurt anything I had the same issue not to long ago but my leak ended up being the pump res. o ring itself dripping onto the top of the gear box right on the fittings so it looked like the threads on the pressure hose were not sealing.
There is definitely an o-ring that fits on the end of the steel tube that goes into the steering box. It is 1/4" I.D. and about 1/16" thick. There should be no sealer (or Teflon tape) on the the threads of the fitting. The o-ring does all the sealing.
The hose was from NAPA, so I expect it should be a higher quality. Are you sure there is an o-ring that goes on that end, because I can't even find it in the schematics in the factory manual?
I couldn't find a reference to it either. I was curious about it. What was the napa part number for the hose you used? The Motorcraft part number is WPT372. Used on over 700 ford vehicles. So you likely got the correct hose. But you may have got one without the o-ring. Cross reference the MC part on the Napa site to double check. Also a good parts store will have just the o-ring. Have them match it to an in stock hose. Maybe you can just pop off the fitting and add the 0-ring if it's not there.
Im subscribed to this post, because I also have a little leak in the union between the nut of the steel tube from the press. hose and the nut that its in the plastic reservoir, its tighten but the steel tube pivot a little, so are you sure there are there an o-ring?.
I just replaced the steering gear box on my E-350 last night. I had to replace the pressure hose also. The gear box came with an o-ring set, the hose also had an o-ring set with it.
The pressure hose end that goes to the steering gear box has a small (~1/4" I.D.) o-ring that seats on the tube, not the tube nut. The end that goes to the pump has a Teflon ring (~5/8" I.D.) that seats high up on the threads of the tube nut.
A hose that goes to the plastic reservoir would be a return hose, not a pressure hose. I have not worked on that hose before.
I need to go back to the NAPA and have them look at another one and see if it came with an o ring. I'm about positive that mine didn't. Thanks fellas. I knew someone else had to run in to this issue.
i have that same issue!! brand new hp ps line and the dang threads are leaking, its so agrivating, i got some rtv sealer and it stoped it for a while but its just a real small trickle my left leaf springs are always wet looking
The threads do not seal the hose....a small o-ring does. The teflon washer is just a wear ring so the hose can pivot easier. It needs to move a small amount because of engine movement.
The PS line I buy usually do not have the o-rings installed on the end of the hose. They are in a small plastic bag loose in the packaging the hose came in. It may have been overlooked or damaged during installation.
Well, yesterday I took out the pressure hose and seems that there are an O-ring between the nut and the steel tube, I couldnt see it but I could feel it becuase you cant move easily the nut and for sure has to be there to stop the fluid. Also noticed the teflon washer or ring and it was a little damaged, so I took it out and put there a viton o-ring, because I dont have a new one plastic (teflon) washer. Seems that the leak is not there anymore
I dont know if it is going to fix "temporary" the leak, or not, whats your opinion?. And where I cant buy that teflon washer? it only comes with the hose "kit" or it has a # part?.
