I am trying to install the lokar TV cable kit on my 351 56 f100. I have encountered several problems. 1st the tv arm which attaches to the trans (out of a 93 tbird) is constructed so that the end which goes over the shaft from the trans is almost 1/2 inch thick ( like a built in spacer) which leaves almost no shaft exposed to attach the nut, maybe 1 1/2 to 2 threads with out a lock washer in place. Must this shaft be replaced and if so how is that done and what is the replacement part? 2nd on the other end I am attaching to an edlebrock carb which has a pivot length of 1 1/8 inch from the pivot of the carb to the hole where the tv cable attaches. I am told that this may not be good enough and I need another bracket adapter to change the length of the pivot but no one has been able to tell me what that length needs to be. Does any one know? thanks in advance for any help.
The tranny end of the cable should slip down onto the shaft enabling you to secure it. Did you get the bracket that goes under one of your carb hold down bolts? with that you can make up a lot of cable play. I think they sell it seperately but it works well.
I have the bracket, the problem is not with the cable but the arm which attaches to the trans. The shaft(bolt) which comes out of the trans in not long enough to attach the new arm. The other problem is also not with the cable but how far the calbe moves in relation to the the throttle movement.
I just looked at mine and the tranny end of the tv cable is goofy shaped but it just goes onto the same threaded bolt for the shifter. I rotated the shifter lever 180 degrees up to accomadate a gennie shifter. The tv tranny end points down. the gold nut holding this assembly on is not threaded completely down, but it is snug. The spring points towards the rear off the truck and loops up to the carb. Seems to work ok. As long as the throttle hits it max at wide open before the tv lever hits it's max it should work. I doubt this is any help to you. I dunna have an '88 AOD and edelbrock carb with the same lokar cable, it did not give me much grief. More worried about the hype surrounding TV pressure numbers. So I have a Mac pressure gauge plugged in and drive around with that. Ramble ramble ramble....
I have a late '80's AOD in my '56 F-100. I recently took some pic's of the shift mechanism to send to another member. If you think that they might be of some help to you I can do the same; I would send them to your regular E-mail address as I cannot post attachments here.
The Lokar TV setup that I have had a very short bracket on the trans end that made the accelerator pedal hard to push. It was purchased in '01 so they may be different now. I found a stock Ford bracket and modified it for the Lokar cable.
Just to give some follow up info. I spoke with the folks at Phoenix transmissions who seem to know what they are talking about since they build the transmissions. They say the additional bracket for my carb (edelbrock) is necessary to change the geometry in order to make the aod work properly and that the throttle and the tv cable should both reach full open at the same time, they say to set the throttle wide open and then set the tv cable so that its is pulled as far as it will go. this setting will insure the pressures are correct.
