late 1999 F-250 with 195,000 miles
In the last week and about 300 miles of driving it has sputtered about 30 times and died 4 times. The check engine light has come on 3 times after a sputter but the light turns off the next time I start the engine. When it dies it starts right up without any problem. My code reader wont read this truck, I can only clear the light. I thought I got some bad diesel (only 3.5 gallons) that had water in it. I've tried the common cures I could find on the forum. Put some water treatment in the tank, changed the fuel filter, drained the water separator a few times. It usually has this problem when the engine is cold but sometimes after it is up to temp. It's almost always under very light acceleration or cruising. I'm thinking it might be injectors or fuel pump. I just changed the oil also, I read on here low or dirty oil can effect the HPOP. I'm new to diesels, any ideas?
CPS is where I'd start too. You can change it yourself with a new one from Ford for about $25. If that doesn't fix it, it's a good idea to have a spare anyway.
Don't want to scare you, but the aftermarket CPS are very prone to problems and failures. You can get the QEM new style ford (gray one) for about the same money. If you run the carquest one, get a spare because I am fairly certian you are going to need it.
