bought a used motor for a long block to replace my problem child motor, well its out of a conversion van and has a 1.1 exhaust housing and a 1.10 compressor housing, its too bad it doesnt look like it will fit my spider properly......
What year is the motor?? Normal late 99+ van turbo is 1.15 exh housing & 1.0 compressor housing. But you have a van turbo already -- it's not anything you need anyway!
well the motor is out of a 97 conversion van and according to the ppl i talked to itll work as a long block but im going to do a full write up as i d this long block swap so I'll let you guys know how this all goes
whats OBS? and yeah im going to use the van turbo i have for my current motor, mainly since it fits nice, wish i could afford bellowed up pipes and tubular manifolds......
Quick question? What is the advantage of the van turbo over the ones in our trucks?
The much larger exhaust housing allows the turbo to make more boost with a lot less back pressure. It's the back pressure that creates high EGTs and stresses the turbo. I need to make a few runs with my new gauge to see what the max back pressures are. Unfortunately, I didn't have the gauge when I had the stocker on it, so I won't know what it was before. I do know that my EGTs are WAAAY down compared to before. I was able to hit over 1500, and now I'm only getting into the 1300 range max. So a 200 deg drop in EGTs, and the ability to make more boost safely is what you gain.
I know that the larger exhaust housing will move the power band up in rpms and hp slightly. Is the compressor side also larger in the vans ? And if so how does that contribute to performance.
Compressor side is the same. But a lot of us put the ATS compressor housing on that helps out with surge issues. Van turbos have supported over 400 RWHP, dyno proven. 430ish is what I've seen.
the turbo i got on this motor has a two piece exhaust up pipe "T" it goes to a square flange on the turbo and the intake and exhaust are a 1.10 A/R ratio so what could that do for a motor? looks strangely similar to this one seen at dieselsite,
