Pickup trucks from ... India?

Mahindra to sell diesel pickup trucks in the U.S.

http://www.time.com/time/world/artic...?xid=rss-world

Sounds interesting to me. Would you buy one?

I agree. Something like a 1980 Ford Courier, with a 4 cylinder diesel motor, getting 30 mpg, sounds like a good seller to me.

$20k base sounds too high though.

Mahindra makes some pretty respectable compact tractors (usually rated after Kubota and BEFORE JD) so yes, I would consider one. I have always been a fan of the boxy early-80s Japanese SUVs and pickups (I have an 80 Courier and have had Mazdas, and even an 86 Trooper Diesel), the availability of a compact diesel is just icing on the cake. Give me a five speed with it, and I've found my new family SUV.
The only downside is all the emissions crap the EPA is going to saddle these things with- DPF, EGR, and probably Urea injection by the time these hit market. I bet a solid third of the cost of these things is stuff to make them meet US emissions.

What the heck? My clever comment on the subject got excised ("fixed"). All that's left is the quote from the earlier post.

If it was cheaper than a US made car, sure. But there are probably quality problems with Indian cars.

The point, for me anyway, is that they intend to offer something you cannot currently buy from either US or foreign makers. Namely, 1) a compact pickup truck, and 2) with a diesel engine. I believe there is a market for that product, even though I might not buy one myself.

A Ranger or Tacoma is NOT a compact pickup truck. No one has built one since the 80's.

I read a review on the truck and the basic problem was that for the same price there are nicer trucks available. The diesel option didn't seem to make enough financial sense at that price unless you just have to have a diesel.

Flashback, I never owned a diesel but was severly tempted by an early 80s Mistubishi 4x4 diesel truck that got 44mpg and had a 20 gallon tank. Man, you could drive quite a way on that. If I had been able to find a Mistubishi dealer, I probably would have bought one, but at that time there weren't that many around.

If my F250 could get 20-30mpg I would have died and gone to heaven, but not going to happen any time soon.

They seem reasonably tough - they have been in Australia for a few years without many issues.
Tata's also make similar product.

The problem has been for the price point, a Tacoma/Ranger/Frontier makes better sense.
