Which distributor cap with Petronix?

Hello,

I've purchased the Petronix Ignitor II ignition module and Flamethrower II coil for my 428. I've read the FTE tech article on replacing the small distributor cap with the large cap. Can I use the larger cap with the Petronics components or do I need to stay with the small cap? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

The idea with the larger cap is to keep each post more isolated when you go to a higher voltage coil so the spark doesn't jump to other cylinders, or at least, the voltage doesn't leak off to other cylinders.

I would imagine since the coil you're looking at is a 45KV coil, you'll want to do the large cap.

Unlike, say, the Mallory conversion kits that include a new rotor, the Pertronix just replaces the points, so you continue to use the stock rotor.

With the big cap, a rotor that matches will not be a problem with the Pertronix.

Krewat,

I understand you to mean that when I get the larger cap I just need to get the matching rotor and they will work with the (428) Petronix Ignitor II unit and Flamethrower II coil even though the rotor and cap are for a later model (302 / 351) not for a 428 . Is that correct?

Art,

The fact that a rookie weekend warrior type "mechanic" like myself with no real previous FE experience can take on the task of resurrecting a 66 F250 and replace a 352 with a 428 (still in process) with the much appreciated guidance of the knowledgeable and considerate forerunners on this site, testifies to the great help that guys like yourself are to rookies like me.

I've removed the 352 and am making the engine bay ready for the 428. I'll be adding parts from the 352 to the 428 as they apply in the next week or so. I hope to have it running in the next month. I've been chomping at the bit for monhs to fire up the 428. I had to get the disc brake and powerssteering upgrade done first. This project is teaching me patience. I'll share the results with the members here (hopefully soon).

Thank you.
