door lock help

I am having some major issues with my door locks on my 53 f100. I ordered new door strikers from npd. Mine where worn and the passenger side sometimes wouldn't catch so you would have to shut the door 4-5 sometimes before it would shut and catch. Once it shut and caught though the door would stay closed and no issues.

After installed new door striker plates on the passenger side the door will randomly open up. I have adjusted a few different times and when I shut the door I shake the door as hard as I can and it rocks the whole truck but doesnt open. Its wierd like just sometimes it just opens and scares the crap out of me.

Any ideas on something I am missing or need to do? I installed new door stricker, shim, and new screws with loc-tite blue.

It is not the striker plate, it is the door latch that is not staying latched. If you remove the latch from the door, it may be that the star wheel which has a ratchet type lock needs cleaning and oiling. If not, replace the latch.

Two things: You can use '56 latches and striker plates as they are the "safety" type. The striker plate on a 56 has an outside edge that would keep the star wheel from being able to pull out if the door was pulled outward from the door post in a collision. The star wheel on the latch is less wide and is reduced to a shaft to make this work.

There is nothing that is unsafe agout the '53-'55 latches, other than this pullout feature.

Yes, the door strikers are the same except that the security plate for the '56 has to be added to the striker assy. So if you don't have the serurity plate, there is no use in using the '56 latch. Wear is better with the 53-55 latches, as the contact surface of the star wheel is wider.

I have an extra passenger side latch and I need a passenger side striker, I tried to PM you but you cannot receive PMs for some reason. E-mail me at alanco@starband.net.

Whats weird is I put the old striker plate on and its fine now. Is it the quality of the door striker? Seems if it was a latch issue why would it work with the old striker?

Striker Plate

It may be that you just needed to adjust the striker plate. The striker plate is screwed in to three adjustable nut plates that are probably stuck. Loosen up the screws that hold the striker and tap the screws back with a small ball pein hammer, move the striker where it needs to go, then tighten the screws. The striker also controls the depth of the door when latched. Make sure the door hinges are adjusted for door height so the contact guide does not pull the door up or so it does not hold the door too high.

Sounds like there was a difference between the latch attachment holes that would have required plate adjustment. Remember, if you end up with a new plate, I am still going to have to buy one.

I was kind of wondering if it involves the door hinges maybe a little sag? What has me confused is it works with the old one but not the new one.

My suspicions are that the old parts have worn in to one another, or more likely the adjustments aren't the same. Coat the contact parts with a white grease, open and close a couple times and check the contact pattern in the grease then compare. Also close the door very slowly and watch for the door to rise or drop as it latches. placing a strip of masking tape across the opening with the door closed, then slicing it open before checking makes it easier to see what the door is doing as it latches.
