My idler pully self distructed now I need to put on a new one. Can it be done without removing the fan shroud? Doesn't look like much room. Also, how do you unbolt the darn thing? Thanks.
Release the tension on the tensioner pulley and lift the belt off. Then get a wrench on the bolt in the center of the pulley and unscrew it, the pulley will come off in your hand with the bolt.
Thanks Lazy. I was thinking it was something like that. That center bolt is the same one used to relieve the tension so I was thinking that maybe it would have lefthand threads or some other complicated thing. So if it's righty tighty then we'll give it a try. Thanks again.
Have a look at the arm that the pulley is mounted on, there may be a square hole for a socket wrench to fit in to move the arm and pulley away from the belt.
If you are talking about a idler pulley on a 5.0 the center bolt is left hand thread.
That's what I was wondering about. To relieve the tension on the belt you lift up on the pulley nut which would "loosen" the bolt so left hand threads makes sense. Thanks
Idler pulley bolt on a 351 Club Wagon is Left-hand Thread
I can confirm that the bolt that secures the idler pulley on a '92 Club Wagon, 351 CID with factory air, is left-hand thread. The bolt head is 5/8". After breaking it loose with a 1/2" drive, 5/8" socket on a long breaker bar, a Gearwrench is quite handy to finish unthreading it.
There were three part number choices at the parts store, depending on original equipment. Mine took a Gates Corporation part number 38007, marked "90 MM " on the box.
